castle-of-illusion

Following in the webbed footsteps of last month’s "DuckTales: Remastered," another Disney classic gets a gorgeous HD makeover. More than just receiving a fresh coat of pixie dust, though, "Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse" has been crafted from the ground up. The core concept and characters--Mickey must still rescue Minnie from meanie Mizrabel--retain the appeal of the original, but Sega’s promising plenty of new surprises for the mouse ears-wearing masses.

call_of_Duty_Ghosts_header

If you're a Call of Duty fanatic, then you probably have spent countless more hours inside the multiplayer than you ever did in the campaign. Multiplayer is the bread and butter of the Call of Duty franchise, and Activision and Infinity Ward both understand that. Which is why the two companies hosted a massive global reveal of the multiplayer mode for "Call of Duty: Ghosts" in downtown Los Angeles, complete with fanfare, pulsing music, and best of all, juicy details.

The old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is used a lot in the video game world, where it sometimes just seems like the publishers simply slap a new number on the box before shipping out a sequel. But as Call of Duty moves onto the current-gen and the next-gen simultaneously, Infinity Ward has actually gone inside and made some major changes to the multiplayer that they pioneered in "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare." Here's a list of the best things we learned that will be coming to this fragfest.

minecon

As if one needs further evidence that indie gaming's sandbox sensation 'Minecraft' is as hot as ever; last night, tickets for this year's Minecon went on the sale, and it didn't take long for each and every one to be immediately snatched up.

Or at least the first batch, which only contained 2,500 tickets.

Adjusts flame-retardant suit and takes a deep breath.

Microsoft and the Xbox One are not all that bad, you guys!

Please? Not in my beautiful, beautiful face!

Ok, so I unabashedly declared Sony undisputed winner of E3 2013 (how brave of me). But that cloud of doom hanging low on the shoulders of Microsoft made my heart sad and I really hate kicking a guy when he's down. So I'm here to say to all those Xbox loyalists to lift up your heads and dry your eyes because it's not that bad.

First, let's talk about how Microsoft screwed the pooch in May and then again this week-- just bear with me.

Kiala again! From the XBox livestream! I have feelings to share with you about stuff I disliked. Enjoy.

Ahhhh the livestream. It always feels like attending a Tony Robbins motivational seminar - or a school assembly. I generally spend the entire thing hoping someone will trip or swear or say something blatantly offensive because I am a 12 year old at heart forever. And yet, this XBox event was (unfortunately for me) relatively smooth and nary an awkward moment to be found. I did manage to find fault with some stuff because criticizing amazing leaps in technology which I have no talent for is fun!

Aaaand gripes:

Many folks are under the impression that video game consoles started with the Atari 2600 or Nintendo's NES in the 1980s. However, video game consoles can actually be traced all the back to the 1960s, with the introduction of "The Brown Box," which was followed by the Magnavox Odyssey in the 70s.

To set the record straight, Ript Apparel (a great source for gaming t-shirts) has put together a rather impressive infographic. The "Evolution of Video Game Consoles" highlights gaming machines from the 60s all the way through 2012 with the introduction of Nintendo's Wii U. Head past the break for trip down memory lane! It's become fairly obvious that Microsoft sees the Xbox 360 (and the Xbox name in general) as much more than a video game console. In the past few months alone, we've found out that former CBS executive Nancy Tellem joined the Xbox team, heard rumors that an "Xbox TV" set-top box could be released alongside the rumored "Xbox 720" and seen Microsoft job listings seeking out television producers.

Now, Microsoft has made another move that could increase the non-video game related capabilities of the Xbox 360 and future consoles. Read More...
