VD-W3 Wii HDMI Upscaler Processor

Nintendo denies that they have in-house plans for a Wii HD upgrade. They just don't feel HD compatibility alone will be worth their time. Such skepticism has not hindered VDIGI, however, and the third-party electronics maker now claims to have a device that will upgrade a Wii's video output to a full 1080p. It's called the VD-W3 Wii HDMI Upscaler Processor. Now I'm the one getting skeptical.

Nintendo flatly rejected a prediction last year that they would release a Wii HD in 2010. In addition to publicly parrying with DS successor rumors and answering questions about the iPad's implications, the big minds at the House of Mario have kept silent on when their next generation of console hardware would see the light. One voice was willing to delve into hypotheticals, however, and he thinks that making the inevitable Wii follow-up HD-compatible won't be enough.

Nintendo's Wii has followed different rules than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 since it launched, focusing early on on interface and family-friendly titles rather than graphics and expanded hardware capabilities. That hasn't kept speculators from predicting a hi-def upgrade, however. One analyst in particular, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities, believes that a Wii HD may be coming as early as next year. Nintendo says no.
