Mercenary Kings

If you paid attention to Tribute Games' Kickstarter campaign for "Mercenary Kings," then you know the broad outlines of the game have remained appealingly static since last summer: "Contra"-esque run-and-gunning weapons creation from the team behind "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," with distinctive pixel art by Paul Robertson. (Incidentally, does anybody else get an Akira Toriyama vibe from the concept art?)

Anyway, for those anxious to become a monarch-for-hire, Tribute is bringing "Mercenary Kings" to Steam Early access on July 22nd, alongside with a pre-order discount of 25%.

We last heard from Mercenary Kings during its Kickstarter campaign, lured in by its promise of highly customizable run-and-shoot platforming and by Paul Robertson’s signature pixel art. The game was successfully funded in September 2012, which means that Mercenary Kings will be available on Steam in May (with Mac and Ouya ports to come later).

Tribute Games, the Canadian indie studio behind Wizorb, are Kickstarting a new 2D run-and-gun platformer called Mercenary Kings.

Citing games like Megaman, Metal Slug, and Phantasy Star Online as inspiration, Mercenary Kings comes with a pedigree, backed up by most of the team that worked on 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Of particular note is artist Paul Robertson, whose made a name for himself as an evocative and expressive (if not sometimes NSFW) pixel artist.
