Just in case you're somehow unaware, "StarCraft" is big in Korea. No, I mean really big. Look at it this way: if "Saturday Night Live" ran a comedy sketch on next week's episode that featured the Terrans versus Protoss, probably about 2% of the country would have any clue as to what in the hell is going on. But in Korea, where Blizzard's real-time strategy game is practically a national pastime, everyone's pretty much in on the joke.

I have no clue what they're saying, but I enjoyed the sketch you'll see after the jump so much, I would watch an entire show devoted to this – in Korean.

Blizzard

In Activision's first quarter investor call, Mike Morhaime, the president and a co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, revealed that the developer is beginning company-wide testing on "Diablo 3" and is planning an external beta for the game for the third quarter of 2011. In layman's terms, you may be playing "Diablo 3" on your home computer as soon as July.

Think back. Way back. Way, way back. To 2009. An eternity in video game time. 2009's BlizzCon was pretty eventful, featuring the reveal of "World of WarCraft: Cataclysm" and the Monk class for "Diablo 3." Blizzard also took the opportunity to show of the next version of Battle.net, the one that would ship with "StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty." While many of the features that were discussed ended up making it into the final release, some have not. For example, Blizzard mentioned that they were working on App Store-like functionality for Battle.net which would allow players to browse, download and even buy fan-created "StarCraft 2" maps and mods right through the interface.

"StarCraft 2" might not (yet) be the professional gaming sensation that its 10-year-old-plus predecessor is, but it is still a fantastic real-time strategy game. One of the best out there, with a trio of perfectly balanced military factions, a robust multiplayer community on Battle.net and a single-player campaign which introduces players to the game's intricacies in clever and fun ways. Top-notch strategy.

So when I first read that developer Blizzard was officially releasing mods that turned their masterwork into a cooking game, a puzzle game and a tower defense game, I thought it was a joke.

You might have read in the past few days about Ryan Winzen and his "World of StarCraft" MMO mod for "StarCraft 2." Using editing tools provided with the game, Winzen built himself a spiffy-looking "StarCraft" MMO modeled after Blizzard's other insanely popular game that isn't called "Diablo": "World of Warcraft." The video spread far and wide across the Internet until, quite suddenly, they disappeared with the usual YouTube "this video has been removed due to a copyright claim" message plastered up in their place. Activision Blizzard pulled the plug, which caused some confusion since Winzen really didn't do anything other than work with the editing tools provided to him by the developer. Well as it turns out, Blizzard didn't realize that at the time

Last night Blizzard released a beefy new patch for "StarCraft 2," 80MB worth of fixes and tweaks in all. The list of changes is fairly staggering (and available after the jump), but the major bullet points include: a re-tooled editing suite, an "extreme" graphics mode, Battle.net chat channels, a Master League representing the "highest tier of players" and more balancing tweaks than you can shake a broken Zerg corpse at. Check out the mammoth list of changes after the jump... or just boot up the game and try them out for yourself!

StarCraft 2

For a game with "star" right there in the title, "StarCraft 2" has surprisingly few stars. Sure, you see a few of them in cutscenes and some of the interstellar maps, but it's usually only for a few brief seconds as you're maneuvering from one rock to the next. Seems that fans of the game wanted a bit more on the gaseous cosmic entities front, as some of them have created a new, custom mode called "Star Battle." Played entirely in the depths of space, the mode features no land-based units and, wouldn't you know it, has become incredibly popular!

StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm release

Blizzard was already at work on their "StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty" follow-up release "Heart of the Swarm" in August, but at that point it was "too early to estimate" when it might ship. A little over a month later, there's no official date set, but a Blizzard team member reportedly felt comfortable enough to mention an approximate window in public which would put the game's launch date somewhere in 2012.
