'SOCOM 4' Beta Launches For All On April 5, Bomb Squad Multiplayer Mode Detailed

"SOCOM 4" is out on April 19, the first PlayStation 3 entry in the series developed by the franchise's creator, Zipper Interactive. As is often the case with online-focused games these days, there will be a public beta in which fans will get an early taste of what is to come while Zipper stress tests the game's online play component. Today Sony revealed the details of the beta, a four-phase rollout that culminates in the April 5 wide-release for all PlayStation Network members.

Yesterday you heard all about the cool online co-op features in "SOCOM 4" which offers players the opportunity to build a custom campaign for up to five players. Sony isn't done revealing new info for the April 19 release, however. Today brings word of a Move-equipped Full Deployment Edition bundle for the game as well as one of the solo campaign's playable characters, a female covert intelligence operative called simply "45."

Zipper Interactive might have launched the "SOCOM" franchise and overseen the development of the game's most successful PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable incarnations, but the developer has yet to do a thing with the franchise for PlayStation 3. That all changes with "SOCOM 4," which brings Zipper back into the fold after its successful PS3-exclusive mass-multiplayer shooter "Mag." The first details emerged on the coming game's cooperative online play features, which you can learn more about after the jump.
Fans of Zipper Interactive have been getting their online shooter fill with "MAG," but that fanbase was built on the back of another franchise: "SOCOM." When hardly anyone was connecting their PS2's to the internet, it was "SOCOM" that caused the hordes to pick up network adapters. And it appears that Zipper hasn't forgotten where they came from, as "SOCOM 4" has been announced and will release this fall.

My PSP and I? We get along fine… but we don’t really spend much time together anymore. In fact, I haven’t picked up a PSP game from a brick and mortar shop in over a year (and that may never change thanks to the increasing number of downloadable titles launching with the PSPgo). But there’s one game that’s looking to change that this fall, and that’s "SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3."
