Thor and Captain America

Captain America and Thor will both have big years in 2011. The two Marvel superheroes and original Avengers have their own feature films scheduled to hit theaters, but as of today they also have their own Sega games marked on the calendar.

In the world of video games, two years is an eternity. A game can go from pre-production to retail in that span of time. Consoles can rise and fall. Just think: two years ago, “Halo 3” came out this week. There was no such thing as a DSi. The most recent PS3 exclusive was “Heavenly Sword”. A different world, I tell you!

It’s been two and a half years since Sega signed on to make games of Marvel’s superhero movies. Since then, “Iron Man” turned out to be Sega’s single greatest non-Sonic success in years and “The Incredible Hulk” wasn’t that incredible. Just recently, “Iron Man 2” started building hype. The other games Sega announced it would be making, however, haven’t been mentioned since. That is, until notes from an August meeting between Sega and SCEA were leaked.

After taking a vacation through 3D gameplay in titles like "Sonic Unleashed" and "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games," Sonic the Hedgehog will be getting back to his roots in 2010. In a move credited to fan demand for a new 2D Sonic game, Sega has announced that he'll lose the third dimension and pick up hi-def graphics for his next game appearance, currently dubbed "Project Needlemouse."

The above picture is of Crimson Dynamo, the only villain that's been confirmed for the "Iron Man 2" video game. But his inclusion does say a lot about how closely the game follows the events of the movie. In short: Not closely at all.

See, the main baddie in the movie is called Whiplash, and is based on an amalgam of a minor Iron Man villain of the same name and Crimson Dynamo, what with his Russian prison background. So having another dude in the movie called Crimson Dynamo seems a little redundant, no?

"Bayonetta" is really weird. Don't get me wrong, it looks awesome, and plays like an even more polished "Devil May Cry," but over the course of, say, a minute of playing the game, you probably going to think you took some bad acid. Boss fights against monsters which closely resemble the wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man, for example.

"Alpha Protocol" is an RPG that, despite being in development for several years now, is still a bit of a dark horse title. It's a new IP and, if you just look at screenshots from the game, it's easy to confuse with a lot of the other modern-day action games out there. Seeing it played it is a different story, as it looks like a more active (hell, more fun) version of the original "Mass Effect," from the dynamic conversations to the character skills to the branching storyline.

Michael Jackson's video game contributions were almost universally under the banner of SEGA, so I thought it might be prudent to see how the company feels about his passing. SEGA sent along this statement to Multiplayer:

"We here at SEGA were very sad to hear about the passing of Michael Jackson. He was a true music legend whose songs touched each of us at some point in our lives. We are proud to have worked with him and included his music in some of our most well-remembered games and are sure that his genius will live on through his great body of work. We have no doubt that future generations will be moonwalking to all his greatest hits."
