RAGE

"Liking" something on Facebook generally doesn't do much more than inform your friends that you're really into "Rainbow Brite." But, occasionally, "liking" something actually makes a difference. In the case of "Mass Effect 3," the design for the female version of Commander Sheppard that would grace the cover was decided via votes on Facebook. (In fact, they're now voting on what her hair color should be. Seriously.) Sure, it was an effective marketing campaign, but what do the fans really get out of it in the long run? Well, in the case of "RAGE," fans will get a free game out of it.

The behind-the-scenes videos on the creation process behind id Software's upcoming "Rage" are still – er, raging on. Today, the team gives us our sixth installment in the series, this time taking a look at the art and sound design of what looks like a promising new property. There's some developer commentary on the designer's thought process, but perhaps more appealing, there's video of none other than John "Walter Sobchak" Goodman recording his lines for the game.

Check out the video right after the jump.

It looks like the next id Software game is going to be really big. While no one is sure yet if that also means big sales numbers, but the actual software size itself is large. While delivering the keynote at last week's annual QuakeCon, id co-founder John Carmack revealed the rather rotund shape of their new first-person shooter, "Rage." If you thought "L.A. Noire" had a large install, hold on to your extra Xbox 360 hard drive.

RAGE

"RAGE" is not "Borderlands." It might look like Gearbox's FPS/RPG in screenshots and gameplay video, but the two are extremely different games. They might both have dusty, Wild West settings, dune buggies and crazed bandits wielding sharpened implements of death. They might even both be FPS games. But the core gameplay is very, very different. After all, "RAGE" is an id Software game, and that brings with it certain expectations.

As much as id Software's new game, "Rage," feels like a cliché – fighting mutants in a post-apocalyptic wasteland – that somehow seems perfectly acceptable, given the studio's storied past. These are the guys who more or less made the first-person shooter genre what it is today. There are still, incredibly, politicians and other podium orators who use "Doom" as an example of the videogame violence that will surely corrupt the minds of America's youth. So, yeah, when id makes a dark, gritty first-person shooter, I'm still interested.

The developers have just released a behind-the-scenes video of sorts, detailing the thought process behind the enemies of "Rage." The focus on providing variety to the player looks promising.

iD Software is undoubtedly a company important to first-person shooter enthusiasts. When the developer released "Doom" in 1993, it was the beginning of a new era in gaming. Sure, it also started the dreaded "video game violence will rot the minds of out children" debate, but it's hard to argue that gaming isn't still taking cues from the seminal title. Just three years later, iD would release "Quake," and the first-person shooter genre was not only in 3D, it was possible to play against friends online. Today, online shooters are everywhere – just take a look at this year's E3 line-up – but it's getting harder and harder to remember the way things were 15 years ago.

The game has changed, but iD's John Carmack is looking to the past for a new "Quake."

iD software's upcoming first-person shooter, "RAGE," is still about four months away from release. The game was first announced way back in 2007, and despite the release of an iOS spin-off game last fall, new information about the game has been slowly distributed by publisher Bethesda. Today, the publisher announced a new way for "RAGE" and iD fans to get closer to the action, with a contest that just might score you a free trip to where the game was announced, QuakeCon.

"RAGE" is looking seriously sweet. Bethesda Softworks invited a bunch of journalists out to see its upcoming slate of games last week, and as the embargoes start to lift this week we're seeing all sorts of new promotional content to go along with the previews. Such as the new trailer, embedded after the jump, featuring five minutes of gameplay pulled from a mission to... Dead City. (cue evil Vincent Price laugh)

Bethesda Softworks and id Software's "RAGE" is looking well on its way.
