Sony believes they will be able to convert Wii users into PlayStation 3 users with their new PS3 motion controller, now officially called the "PlayStation Move." A huddle of SCEA reps took the stage at GDC in San Francisco and made their case for the device this afternoon, which was previously believed to be called the Arc or Gem.

It's looking more and more like Suda51's next title post-"No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle" may not be for a Nintendo system after all. Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi Suda has spent some time pondering this year's upcoming Project Natal and PS3 motion controller (which may or may not be called "Arc" or "Gem") peripherals, and he sounds convinced that they are where his destiny lies.

EA CEO John Riccitiello may have thought Sony's PS3 motion controller would be called the "Gem," but a trademark filed in Japan suggests that another name being batted about may have won out after all. So despite efforts by GDC to limit hardware announcements, don't be surprised if you hear Sony call their device an "Arc" during their demonstration later this month.

Valve sees potential in the future of motion controllers, but at least one of the studio's writers doesn't sound so optimistic about developers' abilities to make use of new interface technology. Project Natal and the PS3 motion controller Sony will show off at GDC mean that such control schemes won't be confined to the Wii anymore as of the 2010 holiday season. That's going to put pressure on studios to do better than recycled carnival games on their new titles, though.

Yes, Sony's PS3 motion controller, which at one point was called "Gem," was officially introduced without a name at E3 in 2009. Sony has reportedly confirmed, however, that it will host a panel at GDC in San Francisco this March entitled "Introducing the PlayStation 3 motion controller." Without knowing what Sony plans on displaying, it's tough to tell whether or not the event will provide a name for the device or just another rare look at the colorful ball on the end of a black stick that will allow enhanced swordplay on the PS3.

While Ubisoft readies "around ten" games for Microsoft's Project Natal, it looks like the same number of games in total will be ready for Sony's PS3 motion controller by the end of 2010. The new hardware, possibly known as the "Arc" or"Gem," is scheduled to be out this fall, in time to compete with Natal's holiday season arrival, and Sony clearly wants to have a few games ready to go.

Sony's new PS3 motion controller, whether it's called the "Gem," "Arc," "Wand" or something else entirely, has been officially delayed until well after its original Spring 2010 launch date. Sony had hoped to get their ice cream cone-like peripheral out ahead of Microsoft's Project Natal hardware, and they still may by a few weeks, but it looks like the two products will effectively be going head to head for the 2010 holiday season.

Sony doesn't seem to have any qualms about setting a high bar for its new motion technology peripherals, which may or may not be called "Gem." The PS3 motion controller still hasn't been officially explained, but the company believes they have a game-changer on their hands that will out-perform the Wii and Project Natal.

EA's CEO John Riccitiello may have spoken prematurely at UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference in New York Wednesday when he proclaimed that "Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace." Though Microsoft has publicly attached the name Project Natal to its forthcoming motion control system, Sony has been somewhat cagier. In response to the reveal, however, the company has revealed the Gem may not be the final name given to its magic wand.

The PS3 motion controller, shown at E3 2009 this year in the above sword-fighting demo, hasn't made much of an impact since its debut. Despite the fact that we don't really know how many games will support it, it's not terribly far away from release.
“Kaz” Hirai, Sony Computer Entertainment head honcho, spoke to The Times regarding the controller, and went so far as to nail down when we can expect it:
