"Pokemon Black" and "White" hits stores here in the US on March 6. Just three weeks later, on March 27, Nintendo is releasing its next generation handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. Since the 3DS will work with DS cartridges, picking up the new handheld won't prevent you from catching them all, but the timing does seem a bit odd. After all, why not just release "Black" and "White" as a 3DS-exclusive game and give the system a massive launch line-up boost? In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Junichi Masuda, the game's director, explained why the DS was a better fit for the title.

Junichi Masuda has been working on Pokemon games since the very beginning, starting as the composer for "Pokemon Red" and "Blue." Since then he has moved up the ranks, directing and producing more recent Pokemon titles, including the latest release, "Pokemon Black" and "White." During an interview MTV Multiplayer, he discussed the early days of the franchise, as well as how Pikachu came to become the face of the franchise.

As I discussed yesterday, "Pokemon Black" and "White" starts players from scratch, preventing them from transferring pokemon from previous games until they complete the main "Black" and "White" adventure. In addition to that major shift, Nintendo is offering up new ways to interact with those you're playing with. One of these ways is video chat.

Pokemon is a strange franchise in that it's constantly leapfrogging itself. Earlier games in the series can connect to later games, allowing you to transfer pokemon you've already captured. From a player perspective, it's nice to know that all of that work getting your Gyarados up to level 50 didn't go to waste. Unfortunately, playing with leveled-up pokemon from previous games has taken a lot of the spirit out of recent releases.
Why even bother hunting for new pokemon when you've already got a squad of all-stars? This thought probably occurred to the developers of "Pokemon Black" and "White," as, for the first time in a long while, players won't be able to transfer old pokemon to the new game. At least, not until they reach a certain milestone.

Nintendo may be ratcheting up their hype machine to finally break out a North American release date for the 3DS, but they've still got at least one big title to drop in 2011 for the soon-to-be-charmingly-retro DS. "Pokémon Black" and "White." Japanese players have had the games since September, but Nintendo has now confirmed that the U.S. will have both editions and the 150-plus new Pokémon types that come with them on March 6, 2011.

The Grass-type, Fire-type and Water-type Pokémon that first accompany you in "Pokémon Black" and "White" are old news, both in the U.S. and Japan, where they showed up in a trailer prior to the game's overseas release. The starters' proper names in North America, however, are just now coming to light, and it looks like they're going to be called Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott, respectively. Moreover, the name of the games' new region ("Isshu" in Japanese) is getting localized to something different as well.

The talent competitions in previous Pokémon games may have all just been warm-ups for full-scale musical productions, judging from some Japanese TV footage that contains new venues and actual Pokémon from "Pokémon Black" and "White." The scenes, which appeared on the show "Oha Suta," up the ante with costumes and props, as well as a spotlight during Poké-performances.

"Pokémon Black" and "White" gameplay has already revealed itself to the world, but when the newest installment of the franchise hits for Nintendo DSi and 3DS owners, an entirely different type of video will reportedly be available. In what's become the norm for Japan-based Poké-announcements, word of a video chat feature has made its way through the usual translation channels and sounds like it will provide the means for up to four players to converse face to face for games.

Every tiny bit of new "Pokemon Black" and "White" info is greeted with rabid attention, and this latest snippet of gameplay footage is no different. High quality, direct-feed footage of the game was released during a Japanese Pokemon show. The footage includes shots of some of the three new starting Pokemon, Tsutaja, Pokabu and Mijumaru, battling it out, 2-on-2 style, with another flying Pokemon I can't identify.

The next "Pokemon" game, "Pokemon Black" and/or "White," is the first non-remake from the franchise since "Pokemon Diamond And/Or Pearl" in 2006. "Black" and "White" will feature 3D graphics, tons of new creatures to collect and, based on a recently-released trailer, tag-team battles of three Pokemon at a time. You can watch the trailer below, so long as you don't mind the Japanese. And speaking of Japanese, the game will be out in the Land of the Rising Sun on September 18.
