Developer Pop Quiz is a weekly interview series in which we ask developers from around the industry the same 10 questions and post their responses.

If this was two years ago, you would most likely not have heard of mobile developer ngmoco:), but since they appeared on the scene they have made quite a name for themselves releasing some of the most loved digital crack on the iOS and Android platforms. With games like "Rolando," "We Rule," and "Topple" under their belts, they have become one of the premiere mobile developers in the country. Star Wars Imperial Academy iPhone

"Rolando" and "Topple" established ngmoco as a name in Apple's App Store, but they branched out into the FPS space with their "Eliminate" releases, and they're sticking around with a new Star Wars title thanks to their partners at THQ Wireless. "Star Wars Imperial Academy" joins "The Battle for Hoth" on iPhones and iPod touches in nodding to the 30th anniversary of "The Empire Strikes Back" as an iDevice exclusive, and ngmoco wants everyone to know that they made the game as fans.

Godfinger Review Header

Acting like a god is one of my favorite private pastimes, so of course ngmoco's "Godfinger" was one of my first App Store downloads. Surprisingly, the harvest simulation is more of a thrill than declaring imaginary edicts in front of a closet mirror. Who would have thought?

The news that Apple is working on a unified social gaming solution for the iPhone, titled Game Center, brought joy to many handheld gamers. But what of ngmoco? As oneof Apple's favorite iPhone developers, the company introduced a service called Plus+ a while back which seemed to offer up the same sort of Xbox Live-style features on the iPhone. Now with Apple offering up a first party social gaming option, Plus+ appears to have been left out in the cold. Or has it? Simon Jeffery, the Chief Publishing Officer of ngmoco, released a statement which actually seems supportive of Game Center, saying that the company saw the writing on the wall and altered Plus+ in anticipation:

"Eliminate," from "Rolando" iPhone developer ng:moco, is definitely blazing some new ground on the platform, offering up a free-to-play 3D FPS in a market that's over-saturated with simple match-3 puzzle games.

"Eliminate" is a new FPS from ngmoco for the iPhone. The hook, and there are few better, is that the game is free. That's a tall order considering that it features fully 3D graphics and online multiplayer support, both rare commodities on the App Store.

Freeverse is the first 3rd party developer that will be compatible with ngmoco's Plus+ system on the iPhone. In a lot of ways, Plus+ is basically Xbox Live for the iPhone, letting you create a user profile and unlock achievements across any iPhone games that support the system. It also supports a universal friends list for profile comparisons and multiplayer options.

Now that the iPhone 3G S is out and about (and selling one million units in the first weekend), I was kinda wondering what the future of iPhone gaming might look like. And who better to fill in the blanks than Neil Yong of ng:moco. His company has been innovating left and right on the platform (most recently with Plus+, the iPhone's answer to Xbox Live). But he's got more in store, and it involves the 3G S and it's new capabilities.

"I think compass and video are really important, if you wanna build augmented reality games, which I think could be a really exciting category in New Mobile. You can start to make games that sit on top of the real world."

Keep in mind this doesn't mean ng:moco will be leading the charge with this games. After all, Young has already said that they have no plans for 3G S-exclusive titles. But the prospect of new technology seems to make his imagination run wild:

The reveal of the iPhone 3GS at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference this week was exciting some, soul-crushing for others. For example, if you bought a 3G in the past year or so, upgrading to a 3GS, with its improved processor and graphics chip, will set you back several hundred dollars (at least if you're buying through AT&T). Video support, and improved camera and faster load times are probably not worth the expense (though that's really up to you), but what games will you be missing out on?

We spoke to Neil Young, co-founder of ngmoco, one of the leading game publishers on the iPhone. You may know them from their work on "Rolando", "Topple" and, most recently, "Star Defense." The question: Will they be making iPhone 3GS-exclusive games?
