Mass Effect 3 features both the end of a trilogy, and "the end of a galaxy at war" according to Bioware. It won't be the closing chapter in the entire Mass Effect franchise, but it is the end of an era, and while we're unsure if it will close the book on Commander Shepard, it will be the end of the story as we know it so far. With each game, Bioware has upped the ante by including new gameplay mechanics for players, but when Mass Effect 3 comes out on the Xbox 360, the Kinect voice control really changes how you play.

And here we are in 2012, the midst of the nice, quiet season where the deluge of games slows down and we can contemplate in this less busy news cycle. It's also a great time to look back on the last year and think about what the industry at large did well and what they should perhaps be doing in the future. This was the year where Modern Warfare 3 didn't just predictably sell well, it broke entertainment records at large, and where a surprising number of your friends were probably talking about Skyrim that might not otherwise.
And today, a lot of game production teams are coming back from the holidays refreshed, reinvigorated, and ready to start creating the next unit shifter. What I've come up with is a list of ten areas where I'd love for the game industry to be thinking and exploring in the coming months as they develop the next crop of 2013-2015 releases. Nearly all are geared towards continuing to expand the gaming audience in some way. A few of these are old news, and some are my own particular interests, but that's why it's an Op-Ed and not an "Op-Everything to Everyone."

One of the bigger surprises as this year's VGAs was a look at the next game staring Alan Wake, which turned out to be "American Nightmare." Earlier this week the team at Remedy pulled back the curtain on the game's Fight 'Till Dawn mode, as well as what gamers can expect when the game hits Xbox Live Arcade early next year. While it isn't a complete 360 from "Alan Wake," there are a variety of gameplay tweaks and lessons that were learned that developers Oskari "Ozz" Hakkinen and Matias Myllyrinne helped shed some light on at a recent game demo. Below are ten of the most noteworthy developer insights.

Considering Microsoft has their own mobile operating system they have been trying to draw a customer base toward (Windows Phone 7), I never really expected this to happen -- but it finally has. Xbox LIVE users can now access and edit their account on the go with the new My Xbox LIVE app for iOS devices!
As you can imagine, this was an instant download for us as soon as we found out about it and it's everything we could have hoped for. After you log in using your Live ID (the e-mail and password used to create your Xbox LIVE account) you're instantly thrown into a very familiar space. The “home” section loads up with the same gaming “spotlight' we find on our Xbox 360 dashboard and from there we have access to two other tabs – “social” and “games”. Read more...
