BioWare is giving us "Mass Effect 3" later this year, which is a good thing for all of those fans left hanging after "Mass Effect 2" ended on a dire note. The first details on the game emerged last week, by way of a feature in the latest issue of Game Informer. Now a few more bits and pieces have emerged from that same first look, which you can check out after the jump.

"Mass Effect 3" is coming out later this year, during the holiday season. The very last downloadable add-on pack for "Mass Effect 2" hit at the end of last month, offering players a glimpse of the grim future to come in BioWare's upcoming trilogy-capper. Details about the game have been relatively sparse -- really, that's an understatement... we don't know anything -- until now, thanks to a new cover story in the latest issue of Game Informer.

"Mass Effect 2" has had a good run, but today it's ongoing story comes to a close as BioWare closes the final chapter on it's second game in a planned trilogy with the release of the DLC pack "Arrival." If you haven't finished the main story, then just stop reading right here. Spoilers lie ahead. For everyone else, hit the jump to check out the launch trailer.

When the excellent "Mass Effect 2" DLC expansion "Lair of the Shadow Broker" released last year, some thought it would be the last add-on for that game while BioWare refocused its efforts on getting "Mass Effect 3" ready for a holiday 2011 release. Those people were wrong. There is more DLC coming, and it's coming soon. March 29, to be exact.

Last night, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences held its 14th annual Interactive Achievement Awards in Las Vegas. They're a little like the Spike TV Video Game Awards, only with more respect and less misfired attempts at entertaining the gaming community. The top prize of the night, Game of the Year, went to BioWare's "Mass Effect 2," though Rockstar Games' "Red Dead Redemption" had a better overall showing, with five awards earned.

When Microsoft announced that they would be selling certain Xbox 360 games digitally through Xbox Live, it hinted at the writing on the wall for game retailers like GameStop. At a certain point, publishers would get closer and closer to releasing new games digitally right at launch, cutting out the retailer middleman. More evidence of the impending doom of video game retailers came today as BioWare announced that they would be releasing "Mass Effect 2" for PS3 both in stores and as a digital download over PSN. Both versions would be released right on launch day.

One of my favorite characters of "Mass Effect 2" was The Illusive Man. For one thing, he taught me that "illusive" is actually a word ("based on or having the nature of an illusion," in case you're wondering). For another, he was voiced by Martin Sheen, who put together a fantastic performance as a snide, secretive, powerful individual who loved to sit in his astronomy bubble and judge you for the choices you made.
What we didn't get out of "Mass Effect 2" was a lot of backstory behind The Illusive Man, who he was, how he became so illusive, whathaveyou. He certainly has a reputation in the galaxy, but what made him take control of a once-terrorist organization like Cerberus? If these are the sorts of questions you were left asking by the end of "ME2," BioWare and Dark Horse will be giving you some of the answers in the form of a new comic mini-series called "Mass Effect Evolution."

BioWare's "Mass Effect 2" is a great game, and has been aided by the Cerberus Network, a microstore accessible from the main menu which offers easy access to digitally delivered content.
One of the more fun aspects of the Cerberus Network has come in the form of daily news updates from around the fictional galaxy. Players are greeted with some random non-game-related news item on the main menu screen and can then those access updates from news terminals scattered in various planetary settlements. Unfortunately, all good things must end: EA has confirmed that the daily news update service will be going on hiatus after January 24 -- Cerberus Network's one year anniversary -- save for three weeks later on in 2011. The final week will serve as a lead-in for... wait for it... a new DLC pack.

If you're the sort of person who prefers to binge on episodic content, rather than ingest it as it's released in small batches, you've likely been holding off on the three post-release "Mass Effect 2" DLC chapters. Your patience and preference to gorge finally pays off today, as all three are on sale on Xbox Live, letting you snag each piece for 200 Microsoft points (or $2.50).

Looking at the release list at the beginning of 2010, you could surmise that this year was going to be a safe one. "Safe" in the sense that we wouldn't be seeing publishers taking a lot of big risks with new franchises, sticking to the warm, comfortable waters of established franchises.
What you probably wouldn't have guessed was how much effort publishers would put into designing sequels that were head and shoulders above their predecessors. Sure, there were underwhelming cop-outs ("Crackdown 2" and "Fable 3" spring to mind), but there were also classics.
In and among these sequels, a few new and awesome IPs managed to poke their heads in, many of them coming from tiny indie developers.
But you know all about that. After all, you lived it. And so did I. Here were my 10 favorite games of 2010.
