I can't think of any other villain in popular fiction who's been as thoroughly defanged as Darth Vader. He's kind of culturally become this cuddly monster in black, and he's an easy go-to character for random marketing that might not otherwise have much to do with the Star Wars brand (see here and here, and here for an interesting dissection of the latter). It's almost kind of jarring Vader is used in an ad for something and it makes sense.

In this case, it's for the upcoming Kinect Star Wars, which uses Parks and Recreations star Chris Pratt for a cute riff on being "inside" the Star Wars universe. Okay, it goes on a little longer than it maybe should, but the final beat sells the joke. Oh, and no, there's not a single sign of gameplay: Lucasarts knows dang well you're going to want to fake swing a lightsaber around and they are no at all worried about convincing you that this is something you'll want to do.

Kinect Star Wars will be out sometime later this year.

Many moons ago, I became very excited with the prospect of playing an online massively-multiplayer game. This wasn't some cliché romp through a fantasy role-playing world – no, this was a cliché romp through the word of "Star Wars." I happily plunked down a large sum of cash for a limited edition box – which I still have, for some reason – thinking that "Star Wars Galaxies" would be the first time I ever fell in love with this new MMO genre. Well, I did fall in love, for a few months, then I quickly fell out of love with a game that was, at best, boring as dirt.

As it turns out, people are actually still playing "Star Wars Galaxies," but their days are numbered. Sony Online Entertainment is about to drive the last nail in the coffin, but they're going out with a bang.

Fans of "Star Wars" and Traveller's Tales' ongoing Lego games franchise have something new to look forward to this fall. No, it's not another "Lego Star Wars" game – seriously, there's already a lot of those – but it does feature the characters from the games. It looks like the plastic heroes are coming to the small screen for a television special this September. The special is based on "Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars," which means it's a television special, based on a video game, based on a television show. My eyes just crossed.

Lego Star Wars III

To say that Lego and "Star Wars" are a match made in heaven is an understatement. When the first "Lego Star Wars" game was released in 2005 it nailed the sweet spot between entertaining and adorable, while still making the fans happy, which, of course led to sequels. However, there's only so many "Star Wars" movies that you can turn into Lego games, but over the last couple of years LucasArts has put a lot of support behind the canonical expanded universe of "The Clone Wars." The original animated series bridged the gap between "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith," but since then there have been new large and small screen adaptations of the series, and now the spin-off is complete, with its own Lego video game, "Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars," but this expanded universe may be extending itself a little too far.

Star Wars The Old Republic Trooper

With 10 years of gameplay on Bioware's list of goals for "Star Wars: The Old Republic," they're going to need a lot of class and combat options. The upcoming MMO game will have tons of races and starships, but it's also going to shine a spotlight on some occupations that have historically belonged to underdeveloped characters in the core Star Wars universe. Troopers are one such class, and Bioware's team has now explained exactly how they'll roll in the fight against the Dark Side.

Star Wars The Old Republic 10 Years

10-year plans are popular this month. First, Ubisoft talked about a decade's worth of intentions for Assassin's Creed, and now Electronic Arts is talking about just as many years for one game — "Star Wars: The Old Republic." The topic came up as EA CFO Eric Brown was addressing his "Old Repulic" outlook at the UBS Annual Media and Communications Conference in New York where expressed hopes that the MMO will last into 2021 (assuming a Spring 2011 release).

When Microsoft rolled out Kinect at E3 2010, they included some short demo scenes from a Star Wars game. Unfortunately, we haven't see much more of that game since, save a lonely Amazon.com listing that still predicts a December 31, 2011 launch date. Hopeful Jedi Knights have a little more hope to cling to this week, however, as Microsoft has confirmed that "Star Wars Kinect" is still being readied for next year.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2

It's always a bitch when things don't go as you planned, and "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2" marks the second time that Darth Vader's plans don't exactly fall into place for him and his secret apprentice. While it is really just another example in a long line of ill-conceived plans for The Dark Lord of The Sith, at least this one results in a fairly enjoyable, albeit short, video game documenting the second journey of Vader's apprentice, Starkiller. Things could have been worse, as we all know from "Episodes I" through "III."

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Even though Blizzard went back on its controversial decision to require real names in the official "WoW" forums, fans might still be sore. What better way to inflict revenge than to join another MMO? The time may soon be ripe, as "Star Wars: The Old Republic" has just entered a closed-beta phase in which outsiders will be able to test out BioWare's biggest and most epic timesuck yet.

Unfortunately it's invite only, and if you're reading this, you probably didn't get an invite, since you're not frantically trying to install the game right now.

Admiral Ackbar

The original "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" was far from perfect, but it did have the best original story in a Star Wars video game ever. For the first time, we were able to experience the seeds of the Rebellion, forming on the shoulders of Darth Vader's ex-apprentice. Haden Blackman, the project lead and writer behind the first "Force Unleashed," is also heading up the sequel, so you can expect that same high-quality storytelling to return. It also sounds like we're going to be getting an appearance from everyone's favorite "It's a trap!"-shouting amphibi-man, Admiral Ackbar.
