FROM MTV GEEK:

Halloween's right around the corner and you're looking for some games that might be fun to turn on with the lights off. Well, check out these ten titles that are definitely worth hunting down for some console-based thrills and chills!

10. Alan Wake (Xbox 360)

In this long-in-development from Max Payne developer, Remedy, you play as a world-famous writer who travels to the small town of Bright Falls to work on your latest novel when your wife turns up missing and you're beset by shadowy creatures and scenarios from the novel you haven't even finished yet. For much of the game, you'll be wandering around in the dark, using your trusty flashlight to fend off enemies and whatever firearms you can grab to take them out. You can find a few genuine scares while being attacked from all sides by former-people muttering crazy nonsense at you. However, the primary mechanic and the basic structure of this 2010 title quickly gets repetitive, and some of the intentionally... pulpy writing gets downright awful.

left 4 dead 2 dlc

"Left 4 Dead 2" may have featured four brand-new characters and all new environments, but fans still have a fondness for the original campaign chapters. "No Mercy" was already released as part of the last DLC pack, "The Sacrifice," and now the remaining three will be coming in the next pack. Also in the pack is a brand new campaign called "Cold Stream," which was actually created by the "Left 4 Dead" fan community.

Left 4 Dead Mac

"Left 4 Dead 2" made it onto Steam for Mac before the series' first installment, but Valve wanted to have both available in time for Halloween this week, and they've now achieved that goal. A list of Steam updates for the game, including tank speed alterations and voting options, casually slipped Mac support in at the top, but the "Left 4 Dead" blog got a little more festive with the news.

Left 4 Dead 2 Mac

Valve brought back Versus Survival Mode for "Left 4 Dead 2" last week, and this week they'll be sprucing up the the core title for a brand new platform. Ever since they brought Steam to Mac systems earlier this year, titles like "Portal" and "Team Fortress 2" began trickling in as well, and now "L4D2" will officially be there too.

Left 4 Dead 2 Versus Survival

Did Valve disappoint you back in July when they introduced Versus Survival play and then continued on with their mutation cycle? If so, this week's Versus Survival redux should get your zombie-hunting guns standing at attention. The mode where teams alternate attempts at besting one another's survival times was described in the same language as it was before plus a few added words in an update that also included info about Part 3 of the Mike Oeming comic and the upcoming "Sacrifice" DLC.

Left 4 Dead 2 DLC

Valve will be keeping a lot of options open for players who dive into their new "Sacrifice" DLC for "Left 4 Dead" and "Left For Dead 2." The story, which will be previewed in an upcoming digital comic this September, leaves room for alternate paths to be taken and explains how the team from the first game lost one of its members. The four-part comic covering the characters' backstories, meanwhile, will be drawn by Brian Michael Bendis' "Powers" collaborator, artist Mike Oeming.

Left 4 Dead

The entertaining rivalry between "Left 4 Dead" and "Dead Rising" kicked off with an achievement in the first "L4D." The Zombie Genocidest achievement demanded that players "kill" 53,595 Infected in the game. A strange number, but not when you recall that "Dead Rising" had its own achievement, Zombie Genocider, which demanded a kill count of 53,594.

Valve's sassy ways continue in the new DLC for "Left 4 Dead 2," "The Passing." The above pic, snapped by Nintendo Tim (his legal name) over at Destroyed Controller, shows the fate of everyone's favorite war-covering journalist. The message is written on the wall in the pool hall of Chapter 2.

Otis,
Out of film, No Helicopter
Zombies are too fast.
Not going to make it,
Frank West

It's true, the zombies in "Left 4 Dead" are way faster than the shambling and brainless of Willamette. Poor Frank, he never stood a chance.

Now how will Blue Castle Games, the developers of "Dead Rising 2" strike back? A Bill outfit hidden in the game would just about make my day.

Left 4 Dead 2

It's been a little while since we joined Coach and his crew of zombie killers on another quest for survival, but next week will apparently add to the story of "Left 4 Dead 2" with the release of a new campaign. Titled "The Passing," this campaign will take place between the first and second "Left 4 Dead 2" campaigns, and will actually feature the original "Left 4 Dead" survivors in some way.

In addition to the cross-over, new modes and enemy types (such as the survivor zombie, who drops handy gear) will be in there for good measure. Hooray!

Keep an eye on the official "Left 4 Dead 2" blog for more information about "The Passing" next week.

Wizard of Oz Left 4 Dead

Can't say this mash-up ever occurred to me, though, in hindsight, it seems sort of obvious. Four people from four different backgrounds trying to conquer a gauntlet to ensure their future survival. Whether they're up against flying monkeys or zombies, the challenge before them is still epic.

The image above was created for the "Character of the Week" contest on Concept Art and was collected by Super Punch in a much more viewable format. Hardly any of the "Oz" re-imaginings are video game related, but they're all extremely impressive and make me upset that the recent SyFy re-imagining was so terrible.

Left 4 Dead 2

On the non-spoilery side of some new "Left 4 Dead" reveals, the upcoming "Left 4 Dead 2" DLC episode "Nobody Survives Forever" will directly relate to some upcoming "L4D1" DLC, and a comic book with bridge both stories. On the significantly more spoilery side of "NSF," however, you'll have to click on past the jump where I've placed the rest of the info, just in case some readers don't want to know about it.
