Quake iPhone

In an interview with "DOOM" creator and id Software Technical Director John Carmack, he revealed that while he plans on releasing "Quake" for the iPhone, Apple's already done most of the work.

"Work will start on 'Quake Classic'...Apple has an internal version that they ported themselves for development and benchmark testing. So I'll probably get them to spit up what they actually did as a baseline for us. At one point somebody actually submitted it to the App Store, a version that they had made, and we had to have that pulled down."

Doom Classic

John Carmack has finished work on the much-anticipated port of "DOOM" for the iPhone. Dubbed "DOOM Classic," it's available in the App Store for $7, and offers four full episodes from the classic FPS and local multiplayer support over the same WiFi network. I spoke to Carmack regarding the project, his follow-up to "Wolfenstein 3D Classic" on the iPhone.

The German localization team for Activision's "Wolfenstein" revamp may have missed a swastika or two while preparing the game for release. Germany has extremely strict rules forbidding the Nazi emblem's use in games, and any presence at all appears to have been enough to prompt the game's voluntary removal by Activision.

In the pantheon of formative video games, few are as important as id Software's "Wolfenstein 3D." I'm not certain that it was the original first-person shooter, but it was certainly the one that introduced an adoring public to a genre which would one day give us the likes of "Halo" and "Call of Duty." Of course, what all this means is that the latest entry in the series, "Wolfenstein" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, has some mighty big jackboots to fill. Does it? Read more...

RAGE!!!! Sorry, I can't help but just shout it every time I hear about this game. It just fills be with a visceral need to bite into a roasted boar's head or punch through a concrete wall.

The new trailer for the game is very pretty...and very "Fallout"-y, but when you consider that "Fallout" is inspired by the whole post-apocalyptic wasteland meme, which has been around for ages, you can't blame "Rage" for not feeling wholly brand spankin' new.

But yeah, taking on giant mutants with a chaingun-equipped dune buggy? Count me in! Here's the trailer:

The 14th annual QuakeCon is off and running, and it appears there's going to be quite a bit to keep id Soft-lovers happy over the coming days. Just got in the official list of events and announcements, and it's packed to the gills with enjoyable stuff. Most interesting, though, is the amount of Bethesda stuff. Even though the ink is still fresh on Bethesda's purchase of id, there's still going to be a heavy presence from the publisher.

I spent some time this morning talking with Tom Mustaine of Escalation Studios and John Carmack of id Software regarding today's release of "DOOM Resurrection" on the iPhone. Unlike previous "DOOM" games, "Resurrection" takes control of the player's movements, leading you about the environment almost like an arcade light-gun game. Originally this style of gameplay was implimented simply because id wasn't sure if they could pull off a standard FPS on the iPhone. Carmack explains:

"At the beginning [of development] it wasn't clear that traditional first person shooter controls worked. None of the demo games that people had made were any good at all from an FPS standpoint. So we thought we'd look at the platform from scratch and say 'What type of gameplay would work here?' regardless of what we had done in the past."

John Carmack of id Software spoke to Multiplayer over the phone today to talk about "DOOM Resurrection," (impressions coming shortly) but he couldn't help but talk about future iPhone projects that id is working on:

"There's no doubt that we'll go through 'Quake' and 'Quake 2.' I think that I can probably manage to do 'Quake 3' on the conventional iPhone platform, if Apple winds up addressing just a few things in their system software. When you start looking at the 3GS, ['Quake 3'] would not be a problem at all."

Even though id Software still has a publishing agreement with Activision (for "Wolfenstein") and EA (for "RAGE"), Zenimax is definitely a more ideal home for the company. The acquisition of id by Zenimax, parent company of Bethesda Softworks, was announced yesterday. John Carmack spoke to MTV Multiplayer about the deal and why he thinks Activision and EA wouldn't have been a good fit for the long-time game development house.

"When you get down and look at the details of what it would mean for id Software to be apart of Activision and EA, you start realizing that it wouldn't be all roses in that situation. We'd be coming into a situation where we'd have several other studios inside the same company that essentially want to do what we want to do. There's competitive interest there, and they're entrenched. We'd be coming in from the outside to fight for our space there, fight for the resources and attention of a larger company."

In speaking with John Carmack about the recent acquisition of id Software by Zenimax, he talked a bit about his excitement for the iPhone as a gaming platform and that he's spoken to Todd Howard (executive producer at Bethesda Softworks) about opportunities there.

Carmack also mentioned that his pet project, "DOOM Classic" for the iPhone, is nearing completion, saying "I expect to finish DOOM Classic in the next couple weeks."

After the fantastic job id did on the port of "Wolfenstein 3D" to the iPhone, it's definitely something I eager to check out. Good to hear that it's definitely close to release.
