Hook Worlds

Developer Pop Quiz is a weekly interview series in which we ask developers from around the industry the same 10 questions and post their responses.

Thanks to the App Store anyone can become a renowned game developer. Such is the case of Rocketcat Games' Kepa Auwae, who, along with some friends, designed, developed and published one of last year's App Store indie darlings, "Hook Champ." After releasing "Super QuickHook," the best reviewed iPhone game in 2010 (according to Metacritic) and "Hook Worlds," Kepa and his team are hard at work on their first RPG, but he had time to answer our questions in this week's Developer Pop Quiz.

Super QuickHook

You may recall that one of my favorite iPhone games of all time (read: the last three years) is "Hook Champ," which blends the swinging gameplay of "Bionic Commando" with racing and character upgrade mechanics to forge a horribly addictive time sink. The guys behind "Hook Champ" have taken a break from releasing level packs in recent months in order to focus their efforts on "Super QuickHook," the spiritual successor to "Hook Champ."

Hook Champ

The App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch may be packed with terrible "Bejeweled" clones and flashlight simulators, but there are also quite a few gems to be found among the rough. "Hook Champ," for example, is an incredibly innovative and addictive release from a three-man development studio known as Rocketcat Games. The title mixes the swing mechanics from a game like "Bionic Commando" with an old school art style, and adds in some very modern and innovative controls, and thanks to a strong online community, has managed to create a popular new IP from scratch. It comes as no surprise that the Independent Game Festival nominated "Hook Champ" as a finalist in the Best Mobile Game category.

While Rocketcat plans on supporting "Hook Champ" for the foreseeable future (the next update will add a new set of levels and a new playable character, based on another iPhone hit, "Minigore"), they've already started work on their next game. They don't have an official title just yet, they've been calling it "Avalanche Game" as a placeholder, so we'll stick with that for now. I spoke with Kepa Auwae, who is in charge of the design, writing and future planning for Rocketcat, to get an inside look at how "Avalanche Game" is coming along.

Hook Champ

One of my favorite releases on the iPhone received a major update late last night, and the added content (plus the price drop down to two bucks) makes it well worth a second look.

Hook Champ

In this week's iPhone gaming round-up, I'm pulling out two quick recommendations and something to keep an eye out for. Think you can handle it? Good, lets go!

"Hook Champ" ($2.99, Lite Version Available)
Old school to the max, "Hook Champ" features "Bionic Commando"-style swing gameplay at top speed with retro graphics and shotguns. You're basically tasked with swiping the jewels from a variety of underground temples before swinging to freedom. The game's art style is very similar to that of indie mainstay, "Spelunky," featuring an Indiana Jones knock-off as the hero. There's a light RPG element, too, as you can upgrade the hero's rope, weapons and even his rocket boots. Definitely worth the $3 asking price, but there's a Lite version if you're still not convinced.
