Yesterday's surprise news that Activision would be canceling any future "Guitar Hero" projects didn't exactly bode well for the already-flagging rhythm game genre. In terms of competition, it seems the only major player still standing in the genre is Harmonix, the developer behind the "Rock Band" franchise (which was formally owned by MTV parent company, Viacom). The news has certainly made people wonder whether "Rock Band" was destined for the same star-crossed fate. The company released a statement today to clarify where things stand.

Today is indeed a dark day for lovers of plastic guitars. Activision has officially pulled the plug on the "Guitar Hero" franchise after years of flagging sales, capped by the dismal performance of "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock." The news was delivered in Activision's earnings release, which also stated that "True Crime: Hong Kong" would also be cancelled. Layoffs have been reported at United Front Games, the developer behind "True Crime," as well as Vicarious Visions, the developer responsible for the Wii version of "Warriors of Rock."

Lawsuits against Activision regarding celebrity likenesses in their Guitar Hero games are nothing new. No Doubt was unhappy with "Band Hero," and Courtney Love was thoroughly dissatisfied with the use of Kurt Cobain in "Guitar Hero 5." Now, Axl Rose has decided to turn a grievance with "Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock" into a legal matter, and he wants $20 million.

"Halo: Reach" problems aren't the only issue irking Xbox 360 owners this season. Some Xbox 360 Slim units have reportedly been experiencing disc read errors while playing "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock," and Activision is currently taking steps to resolve the matter via replacements discs.

Activision and the "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" team paced themselves publicizing the full set list of more than 90 tracks that's slated to appear in the game, but they've put it all out there as of this week, and before you even make it to Soundgarden's full "Telephantasm" album that's coming bundled in the first shipment of units, you'll have a long list of core game tunes to thrash through including The Hives' "Tick Tick Boom" and multiple Megadeth and Rush numbers.

The list of "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" tracks has been growing in the last week, but the new title will be getting at least one full album out-of-the-box when it ships. In a move that will officially make Soundgarden's new "Telephantasm" album go platinum before it hits stores on October 4, the band has announced that their reunion effort will be included in "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" when the game launches on September 28.

Activision and Neversoft haven't publicized all of the "90 plus" tracks it's promised for "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" yet, but they have gotten about two thirds of the way there since our last update. Rush fans should be especially pleased by the list after the jump, which contains every track confirmed thus far.

Queen's lead guitarist Brian May may have sort of given away some unofficial information regarding his band's musical video game plans, and "Guitar Hero: Queen" could be on the way next year, according to a Swedish interview he gave.
The interview published on the news site DN.se specifically mentions a Guitar Hero game being in the works for 2011, and May didn't deny it in his response. He did, however, say that his new plan to get fans participating in Queen's music is a secret for now.

At this point, I think it's safe to say that "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero" are two completely distinct franchises. "Rock Band," which continues to push players to create their own experience with custom characters and additional expert modes as well as a new keyboard controller, simulates the experience of being in a rock band. "Guitar Hero" is now all about rock, punk, and heavy metal -- playing finger-melting solos devised by maestros of impossible solos -- while taking pre-made characters on an epic journey through rock-dom. Oh yea, it's also a game.
Brian Bright, Project Director on "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" wants to make sure that people realize that. "It's important that people understand we are not a music simulator. We are a music rhythm game." He stresses that last word quite clearly, and if "Warriors of Rock" is any indication of that, I'd say he's right on the money.

The first wave of official details about "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" revealed that the game would be pumping more story into its gameplay later this year. An announcement from Activision today confirmed that they'll still be focused on the music as well and included a track list to prove it.
