Without ruining the end of "God of War 3," it's pretty obvious that Kratos runs roughshod over the pantheon of Greek mythology. Hardly anyone makes it out alive. Which makes the whole concept of a sequel kinda tricky. I asked Stig Asmussen, the game director of "God of War 3," about how you could possibly continue the franchise, given that there's hardly anyone left. His answer may surprise you (but not if you read the headline to this post).

FROM MTV NEWS: With the release of "God of War 3," players finally get to experience the culmination of Kratos' quest for revenge. What they may not know is that the ending they'll be playing was very different two years ago, when the game had a different director behind it. MTV News spoke with Stig Asmussen, who ultimately took the reins as game director, about where the story might have gone had original helmer Cory Barlog remained on the team.

"God of War 3" is not for children. It's not for some adults, either. It's one of the goriest games I've ever played and would probably make Quentin Tarantino blanch. But, if you think you can handle the graphic violence, fans of the series and fans of video games in general should come out in droves. It's an enormously impressive game that pushes visual standards to new heights.
The Basics
"God of War 3" stars Kratos, the series' go-to protagonist, as he continues his quest for vengeance against the gods of Olympus. The game kicks off where "God of War 2" ended, with Kratos enlisting the help of the titans to take down Zeus and his cronies. Unfortunately, as tends to happen, things do not go as planned and Kratos' climb to the top of Mount Olympus is abruptly ended in the worst way possible. He dies. But that's just the start of his journey.
"God of War 3" was finally released today. Big, big news for PS3 fans, as it's a fantastic game. Since you're probably at work, waiting for the clock to strike six so you can go home in play, I thought it might be a good idea to compile some of our "God of War 3" coverage from the last few months, so you can at least have something to look forward to.

With "God of War 3" in the can, the developers at Sony's Santa Monica Studio can finally rest easy...for about a week. There's no extended rest for those talented folks, though, as they've already got two projects in the hopper, with pre-production kicking off right as their biggest game ever wraps up.
Check out our interview with John Hight, the director of product development at the studio, in which he discusses starting work on two new projects, one "short-term," and one "long-term." Kratos never sleeps, why should they?

How much would you pay to to make "God of War 3"? Well, there's a reason indie developers need help covering production costs. A Sony representative seemed very proud when he revealed that the total cost of creating "God of War 3" should come out to about $44 million when all is said and done.

"God of War 3" is finished. Done. Gone gold, as they in say in the common parlance of our industry. Sony invited the press to come and try out the introductory level of Kratos' grand finale last week, letting folks play through the game's opening credits and through its first confrontation with a screen-filling enemy.
As is customary for "God of War" games, this sequel opens in grand form. If there was ever any doubt that Stig Asmussen's "God of War" would lack the grandeur and shocking scale of David Jaffe or Cory Barlog's, you can lay them to rest now. "God of War 3" has spectacle to spare.

"God of War 3" got a lot of eyebrows hopping this week when Sony Santa Monica director of technology Tim Moss thanked "heavens for Dual Layer Blu-Rays," which allowed the game to take up 35GB. Russ wasn't the only one out there wondering how much hard drive space a game that large would claim. Thankfully Moss's colleague came to the rescue yesterday with assurance that "GoW3" requires little more than 5MB of of space for saved game files.

We've already spoken to Sony Santa Monica regarding just how long they expect it'll take people to finish "God of War 3." But just how BIG is it? And by size I mean actual bits and bytes. Well, according to Tim Moss, the director of technology at the studio, it's very big. Moss wrote the following in his Twitter this weekend:

The latest "God of War 3" trailer, which you can enjoy above, is titled "Vengeance." The title relates to the fact that Kratos, the series' protagonist, can't seem to let the whole murdered-family-and-ruined-life thing go. In "God of War 3" he'll continue his climb to the top of Mount Olympus, but this time he's got the help of the Titans, who are equally pissed off.
