Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

With the Tokyo Game Show all wrapped up, it's been a busy week for the Square Enix team behind "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII": trailers, intro cinematics, and new costumes aren't going to create themselves, you know.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Square Enix -- that's eh-nicks, apparently, not ee-nicks, like I've been saying for the past 26 years -- have taken to documenting the development of "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" for a three-part documentary called "Inside the Square." Today, the first episode was released.

In the grossest news of the day, Lightning's breasts will apparently jiggle in "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII."

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

If there were ever a question that San Diego Comic-Con had ever evolved through its comic-book roots and into a full-fledged destination for all things nebulously "geeky" or "nerdy" or -- increasingly -- normal and widespread, let it be put to rest: "Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" has its own booth, with a new trailer and batch of screenshots to show for it.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

"Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn" isn't coming to the Xbox 360 (or, presumably, the Xbox One). According to director Naoki Yoshida, that's because Microsoft's online policies are too restrictive, especially when it comes to cross-platform play.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Square-Enix announced today that pre-order bonuses for "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" will feature a downloadable costume set based on Cloud Strife's iconic get-up from "Final Fantasy VII," including a Buster Sword, SOLDIER 1st Class Uniform, and the chunky Soldier's Band accessory.

I was musing recently about the concept of backward compatibility. Specifically, it struck me that the PlayStation 2 may still be the finest example of the concept in terms of execution and scope, a feature that Sony promptly dropped when it released the PlayStation 3.

Here's my dirty secret, though: my PlayStation 2 is still hooked up and is used almost exclusively as a "Final Fantasy XII" machine. (And "Dragon Quest 8," but mostly "XII.") It's one of my favorite games, which is why it's exciting to hear that Square Enix are considering -- if only vaguely and reticently -- an HD remake of "Final Fantasy XII" in the vein of the PlayStation 3 and Vita remasters of "Final Fantasy X" and "X-2."

In an interview with "Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster" producer and Square Enix mainstay Yoshinori Kitase, RPGSite broached the subject by asking if other games in the series might be facelifted for HD consoles.

Fina Fantasy XV

One of the bigger surprises to come out of E3 was the news that "Final Fantasy Versus XIII," Square Enix' long-awaited action-RPG, had been re-named and re-branded as "Final Fantasy XV." It seems like a minor thing to casual observers, but for anybody following the game's ins and outs (and lack thereof) since it was announced in 2006 (!), it's a reminder of how much Square Enix' hoary relics have changed in the past few years.

Here's the backstory: when "Final Fantasy XIII" was announced, it was as part of a larger collection called "Fabula Nova Crystallis." That mouthful was supposed to be the thematic and narrative link between "Final Fantasy XIII," "Final Fantasy Agito XIII," and "Final Fantasy Versus XIII."

The story at the time was that the core, numbered series was for tradition (read: turn-based) role-playing games, while spin-offs like "Agito" and "Versus" were free to explore real-time combat.

As time went on, "Agito" became "Final Fantasy Type-0," a Japan-only PSP game, and "XIII" spawned two sequels of its own: "Final Fantasy XIII-2" was released in 2012, and "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" is due for current-gen consoles in February 2014. "Versus XIII" is dead now, though, and "Final Fantasy XV" will is the newest piece of the ever-expanding "Fabula Nova Crystallis" project.

It's not surprise that "Kingdom Hearts 3" is finally a real thing. The long awaited numbered sequel to Disney and Square Enix's saccharine storied, melodramatic fated mash up is just on the horizon (the very, very distant horizon). I can't even fathom the number of teary eyed fans that can't wait to hear the next remix of Simple and Clean while wondering what new fan service-y characters will appear in KH3.

Furthermore, now that Disney has effectively so-opted our childhood with Marvel and the recent acquisition of Star Wars we thought it was finally time to speculate like crazy about who should make a cameo in this beloved series.

Here's out Top 10 Characters That Should Appear in "Kingdom Hearts 3"
