With all of the recent talk of "Final Fantasy XIII-2" and "Final Fantasy Type-0," you might be starting to worry that Square-Enix has forgotten about -- or worse, shelved -- the originally announced sibling game to 2009's "Final Fantasy XIII," "Final Fantasy Versus XIII." I'll give you a minute to sort through the ridiculous number of finals and fantasies referenced above. Now for the good news: "Versus XIII" is still very much in development, as revealed in a new interview with the game's director and real-world hero of the series, Tetsuya Nomura.

There been a flurry of activity in the past week on the "Final Fantasy" front. First, the "Final Fantasy XIII-2" registered, apparently for Square-Enix. Then just this morning, "Final Fantasy XIII-2" was formally announced for an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Japan, a direct sequel to last year's "Final Fantasy XIII." Mere hours later, an update on the PlayStation Blog confirmed the sequel, which will feature an "evolved" battle system from last year's game, and its PS3 release "next winter."

"Final Fantasy XIII" director Motomu Toriyama revealed many months ago that his team had already prepared DLC to come out at a later date, but the story seems to have changed. Now, it's more of a case of there once having been DLC ready to ship out, and those plans have since seen a paradigm shift to the point that there is currently no DLC coming out for "FFXIII."

Some creators distinguish between RPG's and action games more than others, and BioWare seems to be keenly aware of what they're doing as "Star Wars: The Old Republic" takes shape. "Final Fantasy XIII," meanwhile, provoked reactions from a number of RPG traditionalists with its decidedly more linear structure. At least one writer working on "The Old Republic" believes Square Enix went too far and left the RPG genre entirely.

The las "Final Fantasy" came out at the tail end of the last console cycle, meaning that many gamers ended up missing out on one of the strongest entries in the series from a gameplay perspective. The story fell somewhat short, but the vast open world, more action-oriented combat mechanics and open-ended level progression kept things entertaining through many tens of hours, in true "Final Fantasy" fashion.

"Final Fantasy XIII" was able to do a lot of things, like take up three Xbox 360 discs, ship 5 million units internationally and get its own 360 bundle. Square Enix left behind some traditional elements of the series, though, and sprawling villages where you can poke around and talk to people as you like became one of those sacrifices. Now that the game's epic development phase is is complete, however, Square Enix thinks they may be able to bring such features back in their next non-MMO installment.

With 5 million "Final Fantasy XIII" units shipping between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the decision to take the game to both platforms looks like a good call on Square Enix's part. Their surprise move to give the 360 a try might not have occurred, however, if Microsoft hadn't reached out first and asked them to consider a second console.

"God of War 3" may not need any installation space on your PS3 hard drive, but "Final Fantasy XIII" looks like it will be a different story altogether if you decide to install it to your Xbox 360's HDD. 20GB Arcade bundle owners won't even want to consider such a move if they haven't invested in additional storage space, as the game will reportedly take up 18.3GB when all three discs have been read and ejected.

So you can't really tell in the above shot, but those two placards are actually made of 1/4 inch thick plastic and are done up to be futuristic wanted posters of two of the heroes in "Final Fantasy XIII." They sorta look like those iPad-things that appear throughout "Avatar," except they aren't actually computers from the future. Bummer.

"Final Fantasy XIII" bundles may not be isolated to Japan after all if a listing similar to the "Modern Warfare 2" package is to be believed. The validity of the box art ma
