Epic Mickey"Epic Mickey" could become an epic franchise if it performs well enough, and Junction Point Studios' founder Warren Spector planned accordingly. Spector has launched original properties before, but this will be his first big one since Disney purchased Junction Point, and he's aiming high.

Epic Mickey

There's no doubt now that "Epic Mickey" will be a Wii-exclusive, but that wasn't originally the case. Gamers and game developers alike know that release dates and calendars for games are rarely set in stone, but not biting off more than you can chew on day one can save face from broken promises down the road. Warren Spector knows a thing or two about development cycles, having worked games like "Deus Ex" and numerous titles in the "Wing Commander" and "Ultima" series. "Epic Mickey" may have the biggest pre-roll-out hype yet for Spector and he credits Disney Interactive Studios for limiting it to one platform to allow him to meet his deadlines.

Disney's new surrealist surprise "Epic Mickey" keeps trickling peeks and info out into the Internet, and this week's big reveal is the much-hyped retro design treatment for the game's title mouse. While Disney villains in the game appear to be getting a stripped-down, animatronic steam-punk look, Mickey's design goes back to his early animation roots.

Epic Mickey

The first concept art for one of the villains in Junction Point's "Epic Mickey" has been laid out in a drawing table video, and he doesn't look like anything Mickey's gone up against before. Slowly revealed in a time-lapse film, the so-called "Beetleworx" creature is modeled after Hades from "Hercules" and appears to be a mash-up of something created by the sadistic mad scientist kid Sid in "Toy Story," a "Quake II" enemy and the X-Men villain Mojo. Though no in-game shots have been released into the wild yet, the Wii Disney title definitely has a darker tinge to its material so far.

Disney-philes got a huge shocker this week with a newly revealed Game Informer cover that christened "Deus Ex" creator Warren Spector's new game "Epic Mickey." The game initially got tagged as a Wii exclusive, but that may not be the case as new details and rumors feed the fires of speculation.

Disney rocked the entertainment industry this morning with the announcement that it now owns Marvel Entertainment, along with all of the company's 5,000 characters. With sequel-worthy games like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" already floating around and realized sequels like "Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2" on their way out soon, Disney had a lot of relationships to look at across the video game industry, and according to an announcement to Disney investors this morning, all of those projects will be up for review when current Marvel agreements expire.
