Dead Island

UPDATE: All this patch talk has us confused! Seems the "day one" patch did arrive on PC last week. The upcoming PC patch is more for minor fixes and tweaks.

ORIGINAL STORY: "Dead Island" is a bit of an odd bird. At times, it's gorgeous, at other times, it's horrendously ugly. Sometimes the multiplayer works flawlessly, and other times it's a struggle just to invite someone into your game. And, despite all of that, I was more than happy to spend 30 hours romping through Banoi, bashing zombie heads in with an electrified sledgehammer.

Dead Island

"Dead Island" has been out for less than a week, and already people are starting to stumble upon some pretty incredibly secrets that the developers have hidden throughout Banoi. One of the more interesting secrets is the existence of colored skulls scattered throughout the island. Picking one up would give you no indication as to its purpose. It's not visible in your inventory and there's no reference of it in any of the hints. But the colored skulls serve more of a purpose than just as easter eggs. They may just be the key to the most powerful weapons in the game.

Once word started to spread about the colored skulls, internet detectives started scouring the island. If you don't think you have the stomach to search every nook and cranny, this handy guide will show you where to find the skulls, what to do with them and what your reward will be. Special props go to the OTWBoys, whose YouTube channel is filled with handy "Dead Island" secrets.

WARNING: Location spoilers to follow. If you're looking to play through "Dead Island" clean, stop reading now.

In a zombie apocalypse, a weapon is a must-have, and while traditional weapons like baseball bats and crowbars will keep you alive for a small amount of time, the true survivors are going to be packing custom gear. "Dead Island" attempts to replicate this with custom weapons designed based on blueprints scattered around the zombie-filled island of Banoi.

These custom weapons require a blueprint to unlock, at which point you can build the weapons at any work bench, presuming you have the ingredients. These usually require a base weapon, paired with seemingly-random objects scattered throughout the world.

Lots of games ship with defects. It's unfortunate, but we've all grown perhaps a bit too accustomed – particularly on PC titles – to downloading patches shortly after a game's release. It's one thing to discover a bunch of annoying bugs and glitches in your newly purchased game, but what if the game you downloaded doesn't even seem like the finished version at all? That's precisely what some "Dead Island" players are experiencing right now.

I was pretty sure I knew what to expect from "Dead Island." Generally a pretty, pre-rendered cutscene like the one that kicked off the firestorm of media interest, usually means that the actual game is A) ugly and B) not very good. I'm happy to report that neither is the case with "Dead Island," a game which takes the very best elements of "Borderlands" and "Oblivion" and mashes them up with extreme, undead carnage. Last week we played through the first 20 minutes of the game, but the great thing about "Dead Island" is the level of freedom you're given. Case in point, here's the first 20 minutes (minus the linear prologue), played very differently. Yes, this is what you should be watching while eating lunch at your desk.

Ever since the first teaser trailer for "Dead Island" shocked the world with its backwards-zombie-child shenanigans, people have been wondering how the actual game plays. Thanks to a preview build sent over by the game's publisher, Deep Silver, we're able to show you. Yes, here is the first 20 minutes of "Dead Island," captured from one off my play sessions. (Well, more like 16 minutes...we cut out some of the loading screens...but who's counting?)

NOTE: It's really, really, really violent. Like way more violent than "Dead Rising" and "Left 4 Dead" combined. If you have a fondness for the undead, you should probably not watch.

One particularly impressive thing about Techland's "Dead Island" is how it has so far managed to capture the attention of gamers everywhere without much detail being revealed. We know that it is a melee-focused first-person zombie survival game set on an open-world tropical island and we know that co-op play is an option with a total of four playable characters. Wouldn't you like to know a little more though? You would? Good. Hit the jump and you will.

"Dead Island" features zombies, and therefore it will be good. That's simple math. It also happens to be an open-world game played from a first-person perspective with co-op support for up to four. Like "Left 4 Dead," there will be "special" boss-type zombies that present a greater threat than your average shambler, though exactly what form they'll take hasn't yet been revealed. Deep Silver released a handful of new images from the Techland-developed game today, one of which offers our first glimpse at what may well be a tougher type of zombie. It certainly looks tougher.

If you're a zombie, what's not to love about a remote tropical getaway? You've got a smorgasbord of yummy brains provided by vacationers who are too relaxed to understand the danger they're in until delicious gray matter is leaking out of their cracked-open brainpans. That's the sort of fun the walking dead will be having in "Dead Island"... before you chop them to pieces with your handy axe that is, like the one pictured in one of the upcoming game's latest crop of screens.
