"Dead or Alive" is such a weird series. What started out as a fast-paced 3D fighting game from Team Ninja somehow morphed into this franchise about women with ridiculous breast physics. Few other developers can claim they took a fighting genre title and somehow spun the story off wherein a main character tricks women into vacationing on an island – and playing bikini volleyball.
Regardless, "Dead or Alive 5" is on its way, and there's no immediate signs of volleyball or shopping.

"Dead or Alive" may not have the pedigree that its fellow fighting games may have, but it's still been a fixture on the fighting scene for the past fifteen years due to its dedicated fan following. Since it offered a more arcade-style experience when it was originally released, it's never garnered the respect of the technical fighters that flocked to "Tekken" or "Virtua Fighter" or the combo lovers that gravitated towards Capcom's "Vs." series. However, the franchise's latest release, "Dead or Alive Dimensions," certainly proves that it may be able to stake a serious claim in the hearts of portable gamers.

In addition to sporting a cutting-edge glasses-free 3-D display, Nintendo's 3DS handheld also offers a number of other features, including built-in Wi-Fi support and the innovative new SpotPass, which allows the device to seek out Wi-Fi signals and download content while it's in sleep mode. DLC has the potential to be a big thing for the 3DS, something which we're already seeing the first signs of in Team Ninja's plan to support "Dead or Alive: Dimensions" with daily updates, at least for a time.

The "Dead or Alive" series seems like it has always gotten a bad rap. Out of all of the fighting franchises on the market, it comes off as the least respectable for a series of reasons. If you look past the over-the-top story lines and the jiggle physics, and focus solely on the gameplay, "DOA" has a reputation as a button masher (I've always suspected it's the subject of the all time best comedy bit about video games). However, in a few months, when "Dead or Alive Dimensions" hits the 3DS, it looks like the series is going to evolve into a screen masher.

Tecmo Koei made it known a while back that they would be making a Dead or Alive game for Nintendo's 3DS. The DoA world of games is expansive and crosses many genres (some of which the franchise has created from the ground up). One thing's for sure, though; many gamers probably nodded when then they first found out about a 3DS DoA project and assumed that it would be part of Nintendo's broader plans to make the 3DS appeal to older age groups. While it's not a game based almost entirely around beach activities and precariously tiny bikinis, "Dimensions" should contribute to that cause as a fighting game.

A "Dead or Alive" game earning an "Mature" rating from the ESRB is about as newsworthy as a Wii game coming in a white box, but official description for Tecmo's "Dead or Alive: Paradise" describes the game in language that aspiring trash romance novel authors may wish to take note of. Anyone picking up "DoA: Paradise" should expect nothing less than the nearly-naked female cast members the series has built its reputation on, and according to the ESRB, they go through some truly "voyeuristic" activities this time around.
