Bizarre Creations layoffs

Bizarre Creations built its name on racing with the Project Gotham series, but Activision is exploring options regarding the "Blur" and "James Bond: Blood Stone" studio right now, and those options don't appear to include promising outcomes for their Liverpool staff. A post on a NeoGAF thread stoked rumors that the studios was being completely shut down, and while that hasn't been eliminated as potential outcome, Giant Bomb reports that Bizarre will be going through a "90-day consultation period," during which Activison will decide what their next step will be.

Danica Patrick is a pretty popular race car driver. She's competing in the Indy 500 this weekend, but gamers will see her first as one of the boss characters in Bizarre Creations' racer, "Blur."

Though she admits that she's not a hardcore gamer, she certainly played a lot of games when she was younger. "Super Mario Kart," for one, which his appropriate given the kart-style gameplay in "Blur." But it wasn't just racing games. She was also quite the fan of "Track & Field" and even had the power pad. Check out the video above, in which she regaled us with some of her favorite gaming memories, including good tactics for cheating on the NES.

Blur Kmart Sears Exclusive

Even if you have to wait for DLC when "Blur" launches on May 25, you'll still be able to snatch an exclusive chrome BMW Series 1 right away if you buy the new combat racing game at Kmart or Sears. Those may not be retailers that you typically associate with such exclusive content, but you probably didn't know Kmart had its own gaming blog either.

Blur

The Bizarre Creations team behind "Blur" has been willing to integrate competition across platforms and community event playlists, and they're willing to put together some post-launch DLC, but they probably won't be the ones bringing it to handheld systems like the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. That doesn't mean that at a handheld release couldn't happen without them, however.

"Not right now. But maybe in the future," lead designer Gareth Wilson told VG247 when asked about portable possibilities. "And to be honest, handheld is not something that we would do anyway."

Blur

When Activision's newest racing game, "Blur," is released on May 25th, it's going to be packed with a lot of features. The game includes everything from well Twitter integration to the long-lost four-player split screen mode, which should make racing game fans very happy. However, amongst the power-ups and nine tiers of rivals to work your way through in the solo campaign, there is one feature that you won't find in the single-player campaign of "Blur": time travel.

Blur

"Blur" saw several extra months in development thanks to a delayed release date from Activision and Bizarre Creations, and everyone involved wants to see the game as polished as possible when it reaches the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on May 25th in the U.S. With all of the various race settings, power-ups and tracks from Barcelona to Tokyo, you have to wonder where they'll look first for downloadable content. Blur

The developers behind "Blur" at Bizarre Creations designed a few new multiplayer tricks for their game when it launches this May. In addition to taking competition outside of the game into direct messaging and Twitter challenges, the action/racing title will compile statistics based on popular settings choices over periods of time and use them to generate community event playlists.

Blur

Update: For clarity's sake, you can issue challenges via Twitter from "Blur" if you have an Xbox 360 and your pal has a PlayStation 3. What you cannot do is communicate directly from game to game across platforms or directly affect your in-game stats by the act of beating a friend's challenge alone. The info in a Twitter challenge doesn't directly affect anything in-game. Only your individual accomplishments can do that, but you can best your remote friend's accomplishments and send a challenge back. In short, "Blur" facilitates competition through messaging across systems using Twitter as a common method of communication, but the games themselves will not interact.

Original Story: In a presentation last weekend where Activision and Bizarre Creations announced a May 25th release date for "Blur," they unveiled a multiplayer demo that laid out a unique combination of options that will not only allow Xbox Live Silver account holders to compete with one another; they'll allow players from 360s and PlayStation 3s to challenge each other via Twitter. As one of the game's senior developers explained, those concepts emerged from needs the team found in their own lifestyles.

Blur

Activision gave E3 a preview of Bizarre Creations' new action/racing title "Blur" last year, and the game subsequently experienced delays that pushed its release into 2010 last September. Those extra months of retooling are about to end, however, as a multiplayer beta test has been launched with the full game's final street date set for May 25th on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Activision has announced its E3 line-up and it’s, well, a lot. Here’s what they’ll be showing next week:

"Modern Warfare 2"
"DJ Hero"
"Guitar Hero 5"
"Tony Hawk: Ride"
"Blur"
"Singularity"
"Prototype"
"Wolfenstein"
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"
"Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2"

Variety seems to be the name of the game when it comes to the line-up, as it’s pretty much all over the place. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with "Wolfenstein, "Transformers" and "Marvel", but apart from a trailer, Modern Warfare 2 remains shrouded in mystery. There’s also the insane skateboard controller of Tony Hawk: Ride, which I’m definitely eager to get my hands on. And then there’s DJ Hero, which I’m hoping won’t overwhelm my limited ability to multi-task.

More important, how the heck am I going to get through all of these games in the 2 hours I have allotted to meet with Activision? This is unfortunately the blessing and the curse of E3: Lots of awesome games and no time to play them.
