The game industry suffered a major loss earlier this year when Activision made good on a closure recommendation issued to "Geometry Wars" and "Project Gotham Racing" developer Bizarre Creations. Attempts were made to sell the flagging studio, but it was ultimately shuttered when no buyers stepped forward. It turns out that the Bizarre bosses were even given the chance to buy the company, though they ultimately turned it down.

It was a sad day for one and all when Bizarre Creations closed its doors for good last month. The "Geometry Wars" and "Project Gotham Racing" developer had been struggling with its more recent releases, but no one really wanted to see it go. Activision, the studio's former owner, tried to sell Bizarre off and expressed sincere regret at not being able to do say when it issued the closure recommendation. Cheer up though. From the ashes of Bizarre comes Hogrocket, with a core team made up of key members from the now-closed studio.

Pour one out today for Bizarre Creations. The "Project Gotham Racing" and "Geometry Wars" developer closes its doors today after Activision's January closure recommendation following the publishers unsuccessful attempts to sell the studio. Bizarre put out two solid releases last year -- "Blur" and "James Bond 007: Blood Stone" -- but both titles failed to hit blockbuster numbers, prompting Activision to move ahead with the closure.

It's always sad to see a video game development studio close up shop, especially when said developer has been a uniquely creative force within the industry. Yet that's exactly what seems to be happening with "Project Gotham Racing" and "Geometry Wars" developer Bizarre Creations.

Bizarre Creations built its name on racing with the Project Gotham series, but Activision is exploring options regarding the "Blur" and "James Bond: Blood Stone" studio right now, and those options don't appear to include promising outcomes for their Liverpool staff. A post on a NeoGAF thread stoked rumors that the studios was being completely shut down, and while that hasn't been eliminated as potential outcome, Giant Bomb reports that Bizarre will be going through a "90-day consultation period," during which Activison will decide what their next step will be.

The history of Ian Fleming's MI6 super-spy James Bond in video games is almost as old as the interactive medium itself, entering the biz in 1983 with the release of "James Bond 007" for Atari 2600, ColecoVision and Commodore 64. Close to three decades and 23 (!!!) games later, Bizarre Creations (High Moon Studios handled the PC port) and Activision have cooked up Bond's latest adventure, an original tale by "GoldenEye" screenwriter Bruce Feirstein, "Blood Stone 007." Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench and Bond Girl of the Moment, Joss Stone, lend their voices and likenesses as well, giving the game plenty of star power. The question remains however: Is there enough shake in this martini to satisfy fans of the suave secret agent?

Not only is Bizarre Creations' "James Bond 007: Blood Stone" officially acknowledged as a game as of today; it's added British singer Joss Stone to its talent roster to accompany Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench, as well as to perform the original track "I'll Take it All" with Eurythmics member Dave Stewart.

Danica Patrick is a pretty popular race car driver. She's competing in the Indy 500 this weekend, but gamers will see her first as one of the boss characters in Bizarre Creations' racer, "Blur."
Though she admits that she's not a hardcore gamer, she certainly played a lot of games when she was younger. "Super Mario Kart," for one, which his appropriate given the kart-style gameplay in "Blur." But it wasn't just racing games. She was also quite the fan of "Track & Field" and even had the power pad. Check out the video above, in which she regaled us with some of her favorite gaming memories, including good tactics for cheating on the NES.

Even if you have to wait for DLC when "Blur" launches on May 25, you'll still be able to snatch an exclusive chrome BMW Series 1 right away if you buy the new combat racing game at Kmart or Sears. Those may not be retailers that you typically associate with such exclusive content, but you probably didn't know Kmart had its own gaming blog either.

The Bizarre Creations team behind "Blur" has been willing to integrate competition across platforms and community event playlists, and they're willing to put together some post-launch DLC, but they probably won't be the ones bringing it to handheld systems like the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. That doesn't mean that at a handheld release couldn't happen without them, however.
"Not right now. But maybe in the future," lead designer Gareth Wilson told VG247 when asked about portable possibilities. "And to be honest, handheld is not something that we would do anyway."
