Bioshock 2 DLC PC

The "Protector Trials" and "Minerva's Den" DLC packs for for "Bioshock 2" offered some plasmid shots in the arms for 2K Games' lively sequel. 2K stopped short of bringing their new single-player challenges and world extensions to the PC, however, which, according to an announcement today, prompted enough feedback to get some resources reallocated and cause plans to change.

Minerva's Den

The original "BioShock" never managed any noteworthy downloadable content. A few trials here, a new plasmid there, but nothing to write how about. "BioShock 2" always promised more on the DLC, but the first couple packs didn't really set themselves apart, either. It seems that all of the previous "BioShock" downloadable content managed to forget that people love the franchise not only for the gameplay but also for its ability to tell a good story. And finally we have DLC that provides both in spades. "Minerva's Den" is a fantastic addition to "BioShock 2" that is a must-play for anyone that enjoyed the full game.

BioShock 2

I dug "BioShock 2," even if it wasn't a vast departure from the first game. Well, I dug the campaign. The multiplayer was pretty forgettable, and up until now, the multiplayer has been getting all the DLC love, with new maps, masks and ranks. Oh sure, there were the "Protector Trials," which were single-player challenges, but they didn't really capture the spirit of the single-player campaign, which was more about exploration and discovery than combat. Sounds like the next piece of "BioShock 2" DLC will offer up just that.

BioShock splicer masks

Before long, you won't need Andrew Ryan to build your own Rapture, what with all of the "BioShock" props like Big Daddy dolls, EVE Hypo syringes and now Splicer masks that NECA is putting out. The new welder and rabbit disguises showed up at Comic-Con International in San Diego this week where they were spotted by Super Punch.

BioShock 2 DLC

If you're strictly a single-player mode lover on "BioShock 2" and felt a bit left out when the "Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack" and "Rapture Metro Pack" hit, 2K sent out some info that you're sure to appreciate today. A new pack of DLC called "Protector Trials" will introduce some brand new one-player challenges "starting on August 3" for the Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3.

Bioshock 2 Metro Map Pack

Don't go clicking around Xbox Live looking for new "BioShock 2" DLC this week, because you won't find it. An Xbox Live Newsbeat report last week anticipated the arrival of an 800-point download called the "Rapture Metro Map Pack." Sadly, either plans have changed or that info was just plain wrong, as some details about the pack have been clarified but its official release date has been pushed into the future.

BioShock 2

I'm color blind and I reviewed "BioShock 2." You'll note in the review that I didn't mention having issues with the hacking system, and that's because I didn't. There have been games over the years that, because of palate choices, were nearly impossible to play (the "Puzzle Fighter" series is probably the most glaring), but "BioShock 2," with its color-oriented hacking system, was no problem at all.

BioShock 2

Without ruining major plot points in "BioShock 2" (the game did release just two days ago, after all), people are obviously thinking ahead to "BioShock 3" and where it might take place. Does it return to Rapture, or are we moving to another twisted location entirely? Sitting down with Jordan Thomas, the creative director of "BioShock 2," I asked him if they feel like they've finished telling the story of Rapture. Here's what he said:

BioShock 2

The original "BioShock" reached hall-of-fame status in the gaming world, so the appearance of a sequel isn't exactly a surprise. It does, however, create some pretty lofty goals for "BioShock 2" to reach, especially when you consider that a different developer (2K Marin instead of the original's Irrational Games) has taken on the project. So does "BioShock 2" live up to franchise expectations, or should it be written off as a blatant cash-in by 2K?

The Basics

"BioShock 2" takes place 10 years after the events of the first game. You'll be controlling a prototype Big Daddy (a half-man, half-machine giant who fans will almost certainly recall from first game). You're a bit beefier than a standard human, and come packing a hefty drill, but otherwise the character plays identically to the first.

Big Daddies are mentally tied to Little Sisters in the underwater world of Rapture. It's the job of the Little Sisters to collect Adam (a form of genetic currency) which can then be used to upgrade someone's genome to superhuman levels. Your Little Sister, it turns out, is actually the daughter of the current ruler of Rapture (Andrew Ryan's philosophical opposite, one Sophia Lamb), and the monarch isn't likely to give up her kin to you. It's up to you to save your Little Sister and escape from Rapture.

NECA Big Daddy Plush doll

The most DIY-looking doll to come out of video gaming this week actually has nothing to with "LittleBigPlanet" for a change. NECA will be unloading replica Big Daddy dolls from "BioShock 2," which you may recognize from the game's early teasers. The toys come timed for the game's launch next Tuesday and will be accompanied by another NECA release -- replica EVE Hypo syringes.
