Not a fun day for PC gamers. DICE's "Battlefield" series was born as a computer game. It didn't even come to consoles until late in the last console generation, with "Battlefield 2: Modern Combat," three years and five releases after the first in the series. Six and six, if you count "Codename Eagle." Yet with all of that history, DICE has nonetheless made the decision to officially cancel the coming PC releases of "Battlefield 1943" and the co-op Onslaught mode for "Battlefield: Bad Company 2."

If you've been playing "Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam" over the last couple weeks (or read our review yesterday), you'd know that apart from the four maps that shipped with the expansion, a fifth has been waiting in the wings. Yes, Operation Haystings, a jungle-y, vehicle-heavy map has been locked since launch, awaiting an important milestone: 69,000,000 team actions across every game on a given platform. And which platform was the first to hit the mark? PC! By a lot!

In the summer of 2009, EA and DICE took a bit of a risk and released "Battlefield 1943." Although it was released on XBLA and PSN, it wasn't what you'd normally expect from a downloadable game, offering the sort of FPS multiplayer depth that we had seen from previous entries in the series, just in a slightly smaller package. The risk paid off. "1943" was not only a hit, but it introduced new fans to the franchise, just in time for the release of "Battlefield: Bad Company 2." Now EA has released a Vietnam-themed expansion for "BC2," but has the franchise well gone dry or does this trip into the jungle fill it to the brim once more?

It's that time of year again. You've got tons of time off, but because you're such a diligent, obsessive gamer, you managed to play through all the new holiday season games over the last few weeks and now you're stuck with nothing. Actually, that's not quite true, this year. As DLC becomes a bigger part of the game release schedule, companies are doing a better job planning ahead, releasing more content before the game starts getting stale. Case in point, two pretty high profile DLC packs which launched today: "Dead Money" for "Fallout: New Vegas" and the Vietnam expansion for "Battlefield: Bad Company 2."

Electronic Arts' Battlefield franchise will be branching out soon with "Battlefield Play4Free" and a "Bad Company 2" iPhone game in the App Store, but EA hasn't forgotten about DLC for the core series' latest chapter. "Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam" will hit the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 before the end of the year, but the system you play "BBC2" on will determine how soon you can download their new expansion pack.

Since EA launched "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" on consoles and PC, they've bolstered the the experience with a new mode and free map promises. They want the game to spill off of your stationary devices and go mobile with your iPhones and iPod touches as well, though, and an App Store game will see that vision through.

Electronic Arts confirmed their focused drive toward incentivizing new game purchasers earlier this year with EA Sports' Online Pass. This week at E3, they opened up a new program for shooter loyalists called Gun Club that will serve a similar purpose. Members will gain access to new beta tests, in-game content and news, according to EA's sell.

One of the unfortunate elements missing from "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" was the lack of co-op throughout the campaign. And while we won't be seeing the campaign getting co-op anytime soon, EA is adding a new mode, called "Onslaught," which offers up the next best thing. Four-player teams will be able to take on increasingly difficult waves of AI-controlled enemies across four different multiplayer maps. The enemies aren't just limited to foot soldiers, either. Expect jeeps, tanks and a few gun boats to mess up your fun.

DICE and EA continued their march to take on "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" with a direct response to Infinity Ward and Activision's $15 Stimulus Package that launched this week. Now, in addition to lampooning their competition's marketing and pledging not to block party chat, DICE has gone on record to say that map packs for their titles will remain free.

In the weeks leading up to the release of "Modern Warfare 2," Activision and Infinity Ward released a promotional video featuring Phillies pitcher, Cole Hamels, and a pretty inappropriate slur. Activision reacted swiftly by taking the video down and apologizing, but the damage was done.
Seems that EA and DICE, makers of "Battlefield: Bad Company 2," aren't going to let such a gaffe go by without taking the opportunity to bash their competitor a little bit, so they released their own video starring Yankees pitcher, CC Sabathia. Both videos discourage the use of random grenade tossing, but EA's cleverly avoids offending large portions of the gaming community.
