Archie Comics' Mega Man

In case you haven't heard, Archie Comics have been publishing an exceptional ode to everyone's favorite robot, Mega Man for just about a year now. The books are re-telling the story of Mega Man's early games, and they're infused with fan-friendly humor and some of the best art, this side of the Pacific. MTV Geek had a chance to speak with artist Ben Bates about his work on the books, and the finer points of Mega Man's art. Autumn Games' Skullgirls comes to us in an period where fighting games are starting to get wider audiences again thanks to new gamer friendly titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or Mortal Kombat. For all of the technical nuance both of those games provide, in each case there's a basic level of pick up and play that will allow you to simply jump in, mash some buttons, and roll the joystick quarter circle right to make something fun and interesting happen on the screen. Skullgirls is a conscious attempt to buck this trend, trading accessibility for a much more technical game.

Is the barrier of entry too high? Or is this destined to join Guilty Gear and its ilk as a pro-level fighting game?

In a lot of ways videogames are as notable for what you can't do in them as what you can. Bionic Commando's Nathan "Rad" Spencer could swing across chasms, but not jump. Resident Evil 4's Leon Kennedy could walk and shoot, provided he only did one at a time. And Red Dead Redemption's John Marston could single handedly take out gangs of outlaws, but not swim. Adding a new twist on this dichotomy of having extraordinary, but not ordinary powers is Hybrid; an upcoming XBLA multiplayer-only shooter that allows you to zip around on a jetpack, but not walk.
