Can you tell we're still working through our backlog from 2008? The first month of 2009 is almost over, but we're still mulling over which games from last year we need to push through before we can really enjoy what 2009 has to offer. Read more...

There is still much left to play from 2008, and while the games industry no longer has a complete lull in the early months of the new year, just because there are new high-profile games arriving doesn't mean we have time to play them. Read more...

Since it's the start of a new year, there aren't many new games to ignore right now. But we've still got plenty of titles from 2008 that we're giving the cold shoulder. Take a look at this week's picks, old and new, and let us know which ones you're not playing. Read more...

Thanksgiving is a great time to catch up on the games that have been sitting in your to-do pile for the past couple of weeks.
I may finally decide to move on from "Fallout 3" after this weekend, for example. Well, on second thought, that means I won't be playing "Fallout 3" anymore.
Scratch that…
Stephen's Not Playing...
"Loco Roco 2" (PSP)
Why he's not playing what could be the best PSP game of the year: Because it's only out in Europe right now, or so I've heard. When did Europeans start getting games before Americans? And on Thanksgiving week no less! What is going on? I think this game is also coming out in Japan -- where it was made -- before it ships in the U.S. Were there just too many awesome PSP games filling up the holiday release calendar in America already? Or is America the new Europe?
Patrick's Not Playing...
"Sonic Unleashed" (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii)
Why he's fallen out of love with this hedgehog: Sega has burned me one too many times with this franchise. Diehard "Sonic the Hedgehog" fans seem intent on supporting the publisher by buying these en masse every time there's a new one, but I won't be a part of it. I'm told the 2D-ish bits of "Sonic Unleashed" show glimpses of greatness, only to be heavily outweighed by the overbearing werehog nonsense. Sega's going to have to try a little harder next time.

Call of what? Need for who? In this week's edition of "What We're NOT Playing," the Multiplayer trio chooses to skip out on three big franchises.
Read on to see why...
Tracey's Not Playing...
"Need For Speed: Undercover" (on any platform)
Why she's passing on the top-selling racing franchise: Aside from the fact that there are too many games out right now, racing games have just never been my forte. I haven't found the time to get a driver's license in real life, and my lack of driving skills is apparent whenever I drive in video games. I'm pretty decent at "Burnout" since the objective is to mostly crash into other cars, but "Undercover" is going to to have to wait until I have the time and patience to grasp the concept of reverse. Anyone want to teach me how to drive?
Patrick's Not Playing...
"Call of Duty: World at War" (everything!)
Why he's not trying to stop the Japanese: Shooter fatigue is starting to set in. Between "Resistance 2," "Fallout 3" and "Gears of War 2," I'm already stuffed full of high-quality shooters this holiday season. The surprisingly positive things I'm hearing about "World at War," however, means I might get around to checking it out during the inevitable early 2009 lull, but right now, things like "Mirror's Edge" and "LittleBigPlanet" are calling my name in-between sessions of the shooters I'm already committed to. If this was made by Infinity Ward, however...
Stephen's Not Playing...
"Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia" (Nintendo DS)
Why he's taking it easy on Dracula's minions: Well, I was playing this game. I was even enjoying it, which I couldn't say about other "Castlevania" games I had tried in the last half-decade. But DS gaming is for my subway rides, and I've taken to catching up on my magazine-reading. I've considered going back, but I'm daunted by returning to such a challenging game now that I'm likely rusty from a couple of weeks of inactivity. I hear gamers talk about this a lot. We start games. We get in a groove. And then we take a break. Why's it so hard, so often, to get back into them?

In the industry's busiest release season, some games are just going to get left behind.
This week, Stephen is skipping out on an entire system, while I'm passing on a huge game release. Patrick is en route to San Francisco after a trip to L.A. so we can only guess that he's definitely not playing a console or computer game at the moment.
Anyway, here's our picks for this round, and why...
Stephen's Not Playing…
The PSP
Why he's bringing this up yet again: Do they still make games for the PSP in America? What was the last big Sony release, "Secret Agent Clank"? That came out in the spring. Ok. That's unfair. There was an "NBA" game released in October. But, really, it's all about third parties, which are releasing such major PSP games this fall as…. well… there's "Midnight Club Los Angeles" and not much else. Very weird. I could use some PSP games, Sony. "Patapon 2" seems sooo far away.
Tracey's Not Playing...
"Gears of War 2" on Xbox 360
Why she's not playing the game that everyone else is playing: There's no specific reason. I know I'll get to "Gears 2" eventually, but I just don't have the time. With the "World of Warcraft" expansion coming out tonight, I'll be playing my new Death Knight, possibly named Chucknorris, and writing about my experiences in Northrend. Plus, on consoles, I'm looking forward to delving into "Fallout 3" and then "Left4Dead." So sorry Mr. Bleszinski, "Gears 2" will just have to take a backseat for now. Am I the only one who hasn't popped in "Gears 2" yet?

Last week, we here at MTV Multiplayer chose not to play three of the season's biggest games.
This time, Stephen and I picked a licensed movie title and a game from last year.
And as for Patrick, well, since he's off today, I'm going to guess he'd totally agree with us.
Anyway, read on to see why we chose these games...
Tracey's Not Playing...
"Quantum of Solace" (on any platform)
Why she's skipping out on the game for one of the year's biggest movies: I'm not dismissing it because it's a licensed movie game (I have played some). It's rather simple -- I haven't seen the movie yet! The film will be released in U.S. theaters on November 14th. What I'm wondering is... why do movie games come out so far in advance of the actual film it's based on? I'd prefer seeing the movie first before I start playing the game. If you play licensed movie games, do you wait to see the film first? I still have "The Incredible Hulk" in shrink wrap as I have yet to see the movie, which is lost somewhere in my Netflix queue.
Stephen's Not Playing...
"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" (on any platform)
Why he's bothering to tell you that he's not playing a 2007 game: The next "Call of Duty" comes out in one week. I may be busy playing other games, but I'll at least consider playing it. I'm not sure I could say that if I was still hooked on "Modern Warfare," which many of my friends are. What's the risk of creating annual sequels to hit multi-player franchises? The danger that people won't want to convert to the sequel. At least that's not an issue for me. Bring it on, "World At War"!
