'The Last of Us' Non-Review Review (Update)

UPDATE: I've finished the game and it's as excellent as I thought it would turn out.
So I have to be totally upfront with you -- I haven't completed "The Last of Us" yet. You can blame E3 for this one. However, I did manage to marathon about 9 hours of it last night just for you! But sadly, the call for sleep finally hit me around 4 or so this morning. So with that said, this isn't a review so much as an extended impression.
Even with the few hours I've played, "The Last of Us" has so far presented one of the best gaming experiences I've had on the PS3. Naughty Dog has strained out every ounce of Sony's 7 year old system and put out a fantastic, narrative driven and genuinely horrifying, and at times emotionally draining game.

After what felt like complete radio silence since the release of "Dragon Age II" in 2011, BioWare have released the first trailer for "Dragon Age: Inquisition."
First, though, let's go over a few housekeeping issues: BioWare has dropped the "III" from the game's title, it's been delayed an entire year to Fall 2014, and it's using the new Frostbite 3 engine instead of Frostbite 2.

E3 2013: 'Dust 514' Trailer is Short on Bells, Whistles, Long on Information

I don't think it's entirely inaccurate to describe reaction to CCP Games' "Dust 514" as "mixed," but I wonder how much of that reaction is derived from unrealistic, or at least misguided, expectations.
No surprise, then, that with the eyes of the entire industry pointed at the Los Angeles Convention Center, CCP would use the customary E3 trailer to lay out exactly what it thinks is appealing about their free-to-play, massively multiplayer first-person shooter.
Titled "Fight Your Own War," "Dust 514"'s latest trailer isn't the flashiest thing you'll see this week, but what it lacks in theatrics in makes up for in straightforward information: the game hinges on extreme character customization and players' ability to team up with "EVE Online" players in massive corporations and alliances.

It only happens every few years -- when the planets align and the secret cabal of developers, publishers, manufacturers, and retailers convening in ancient, forgotten depths to speak to life a new generation of console gaming. We all knew this day was coming, as Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony riled up the throbbing mob of gamers to draw lines in the sand and choose or perish. We learned tons of new and interesting stuff about the Xbox One and PS4 and got to see a bit of the big three's gaming line-up for the upcoming months. That said, there were plenty surprises, disappointments, and confusion about where exactly are these console makers going.
But that doesn't really matter because if the mass of gamers are anything, they're passionately blind about their fangirl/boy-ism for which ever corporation they feel speaks to them on an intimate level. Naming a winner of E3 can have massive blowback if the company declared "victor" can't deliver but -- for now -- there's definitely one black box that everyone has their eye on.
The officially, unofficial winner of E3 is Sony.

E3 2013: 'Kingdom Hearts III' Is (Finally) Coming To the PS4... And Xbox One?

During E3, Square Enix announced that their second most requested title* was in development for the PS4 and Xbox One: "Kingdom Hearts III." That's right, now Xbox owners will get a taste of the labyrinthine, frankly bizarre contortions of what started out as a sweet Disney/Square mashup over a decade ago on the PS2.
*The first being the "Final Fantasy VII" remake that will probably never happen.
