Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

Square Enix committed to a release date and voice acting talent today with a hefty announcement about "Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep." The PlayStation Portable title will launch on September 7, 2010, and Mark Hamill, Willa Holland, Jesse McCartney, Leonard Nimoy and James Woods will all contribute their voices, though the big reveal didn't include which characters they'll be portraying. Woods would presumably be voicing Hades, which he's done before, and McCartney is listed on IMDb as portraying Ventus and Roxas, who he's voiced in previous games.

PSP 2 rumors are nothing new, even in conjunction with E3 expectations this year. Two anonymous publishers have reportedly begun investing their marketing dollars into things PSP-related for Q4 of 2010, though, and barring some surprise sales numbers announcements for the PSPgo, there's a high degree of probability that such actions could be be connected to a new Sony portable device ready to be unveiled in June.

Yakuza PSP

Sega's Yakuza series will debut on the PlayStation Portable on September 22, and the game, which was previously referred to only as "Project K" now has a proper title in Japanese. "Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou" will be the game's name, and the follow-up to "Yakuza 4" from series' creator Toshihiro Nagoshi already has a pre-order incentive standing ready.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta

The major "God of War" trilogy may have wrapped with a climactic, head-pounding battle atop Mount Olympus, but that doesn't mean we've seen the last of Kratos. Apart from the inevitable sequel in which he'll take out his aggression on Odin and Eostre, Kratos is returning for another flashback mission on the PSP titled "God of War: Ghost of Sparta."

Drew Brees

Just two weeks after announcing cover model Tim Tebow for "NCAA Football 11," EA Sports has officially bestowed the same honor for "Madden 11" on New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Brees beat out Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne in fan voting to nab the accolade. Lucky for him, too, because he already has a a Super Bowl ring and Super Bowl MVP distinction behind him, so there's very little chance that the much-feared curse associated with Madden covers can do to him.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

The eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland began grounding flights in Northern Europe almost a week ago, but the giant ash cloud it produced has been impacting supply chains across the globe. Sadly for Australians, the video game industry has not survived unscathed. Wii games from Konami may be among the hardest hit, with "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories," "Scene It? Twilight" and several other titles looking at a few question marks where there used be release dates.

PlayStation Room

Right up there with the "F.3.A.R." logo among lettering design choices in gaming that bugged me in the last year was the infinity sign in place of two O's in "PlayStation Room." Now, that likely won't be a problem going forward as Sony has announced that their portable edition of "PlayStation Home" is off the table entirely.

Sony wants to compete with the iPad. That's no secret. A PlayStation Portable 2 could be on its way to enter the fight soon, though, and ad campaigns and an E3 presentation may already be in the works.

The term "PSP 2" has appeared in several places, including an online résumé for ProTV coordinator Hilke Muslim, a 1UP podcast that mentioned it in connection with E3 and MCV, where Lazard Capital analyst Colin Sebastian predicted the handheld system's imminent arrival.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Hideo Kojima may have said that delaying a game is the greatest crime a game developer can commit, but "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker" has now drifted away from May 25th to a June 8th release in the U.S. European and U.K. delays have followed suit, and the U.K. will be last in line, almost two months after "Peace Walker" hits Asia.

Red Star

Blending together mechanics and perspectives from different genres and stuffing them into a single game is a bold move. In good hands the experience is rewarding; but in less experienced hands, the alchemical rigors are passed on to the player. XS Games' "The Red Star," a PSP port of a 2007 PS2 release, is a good example of successful implementations. It's too bad I didn't like it.
