iPad Games

Whether you waited in line all night or pre-ordered one like a normal human being, you're likely staring at your iPad in awe. You've already swiped through your collection of built-in apps 60 or 70 times and now you're looking for something more entertaining. Good news, there's plenty on that front! In fact, the number of available games for the iPad can be a bit overwhelming, so I cut the list down to five iPad games that you can feel good about purchasing.

iPad

There are limitations to iPhone gaming, and the touch screen is usually cited as one of the biggies. While it works great for certain types of games, like strategy, puzzle and board, other genres have a tough time making the transition. Have you tried to play an FPS on the iPhone? It's doable, but it's definitely not ideal. Same goes for fighting and action games. Titles that require a multitude of precise movements are generally not suited for just touch screen controls, and there's just no way around that.

Plants vs. Zombies

Apple is definitely putting a heavy gaming focus on the iPad, which launches next month. That's no surprise, given the iPhone's success. It seems, though, that in their enthusiasm, Apple has inadvertently revealed a handful of iPad titles on their web-based app store database of approved apps. Prime among them? "Plants vs. Zombies HD" and "Worms HD," two apps which already have non-HD installments in the App Store, making their planned destination pretty obvious.

Astro A30

I've spent the past month putting Astro's new A30 headset through its paces. You may know of Astro's work from their first release, the A40 headset. Originally designed for professional gamers, the A40 is a high-end headset solution that may be great for a LAN party but isn't really what I would call portable or mainstream. After all, they're kinda enormous. The A30's go in another direction entirely.

iPad

The iPad, Apple's new-fangled tablet computer, will be hitting store shelves on April 3rd. The device combines the multi-function use of the iPod Touch (music, movies, web-browsing, gaming, so forth) but with a larger size and a higher resolution screen.

The version launching on April 3rd is WiFi enabled, while iPads with WiFi and 3G connectivity will be launching sometime in late April.

Hook Champ

The App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch may be packed with terrible "Bejeweled" clones and flashlight simulators, but there are also quite a few gems to be found among the rough. "Hook Champ," for example, is an incredibly innovative and addictive release from a three-man development studio known as Rocketcat Games. The title mixes the swing mechanics from a game like "Bionic Commando" with an old school art style, and adds in some very modern and innovative controls, and thanks to a strong online community, has managed to create a popular new IP from scratch. It comes as no surprise that the Independent Game Festival nominated "Hook Champ" as a finalist in the Best Mobile Game category.

While Rocketcat plans on supporting "Hook Champ" for the foreseeable future (the next update will add a new set of levels and a new playable character, based on another iPhone hit, "Minigore"), they've already started work on their next game. They don't have an official title just yet, they've been calling it "Avalanche Game" as a placeholder, so we'll stick with that for now. I spoke with Kepa Auwae, who is in charge of the design, writing and future planning for Rocketcat, to get an inside look at how "Avalanche Game" is coming along.

iPad

Yesterday's iPad announcement was mostly what people expected from Apple, but there were a few omissions from the device that have left some users disappointed. The lack of Flash, support, for example. This trend started with the iPhone, which doesn't allow users to access Flash content, and it seems to be continuing with their next generation mobile device.

Adobe, the company behind Flash, released a statement regarding Apple's decision, and it's not exactly subtle:

iPad

Apple announced their next major hardware release today and it's called the iPad. If you were following our liveblog of the press conference, you may have gleaned some of the details, but for everyone else, all this information can be a bit overwhelming, so I'll try to distill things down to the basics.

What Is It?
Quite simply it works like a hybrid between an iPhone and a full laptop. Using the touch screen, you can browse the internet, use apps, listen to music, watch movies and play games. It won't be able to make calls, but given the size, that's probably for the best.
