ACBF1

I'm standing on the deck of a double-masted sailing ship, spinning the wheel and ordering the crew to unfurl our full sails so we can race across the waves in search of loot, plunder, and booty. Nearby, two ships are engaged in a duel of cannon fire, and a bell rings overhead to warn me that another ship has turned to pursue us. I need to drop the ship's diving bell over the side of the ship near the wrecked hull of an unfortunate vessel so I can collect some of the rich stuff on the bottom of the ocean, but before I can do that, it'll be smoke and swordplay. Except I'm actually in a hotel suite in Seattle, while a member of Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag" team takes me through the paces, and tries to make sure that I don't run my ship aground on a reef or careen into the wide of a man-of-war.

When LucasArts stopped making point and click adventure games a long while back, the world lost one of the most enjoyable forms of video game art. Games like "Full Throttle" and "Day of the Tentacle" were like interactive storybooks that you could sink yourselves into. Thankfully, many other developers picked up where LucasArts eventually left off, and one of those that has risen to the top of the game has been Telltale Games, developers of last year's amazing "The Walking Dead" game. Not only did it provide a top-notch storytelling experience, it also pumped plenty of emotion to and through the game. They now stand poised to do it all over again with the video game adaptation of the Bill Willingham-written, Vertigo Comics published "Fables" entitled "The Wolf Among Us."

If you've played Quantic Dream's other titles, then you may come into "Beyond: Two Souls" with certain expectations about how this interactive narrative works. Some are dead-on while others--particularly some of the seamless branching--are a little less evident based on what you may have seen so far. Well, starting October 1st, PSN users will get a chance to control Jodie and her ghostly friend Aiden when "Beyond" gets a demo one week before the game's release.

IMAG0615

The modular office spaces in San Francisco's South of Market district makes for ideal residency for video game headset manufacturer Astro Gaming. While the company has been in their current digs for over a year, it wasn't until this spring that they opened a retail store. Its opening was well-timed for baseball season, as the store is mere blocks from AT&T Park, primed for Giants fans foot traffic. Adjacent to their office, the Astro Gaming store is not only well-stocked in the company's latest wares, but also with the latest headsets of their parent company, Skullcandy. The space is designed like your typical urban boutique style shop, with the addition of several video monitors for adequate product testing.

castle-of-illusion

Following in the webbed footsteps of last month’s "DuckTales: Remastered," another Disney classic gets a gorgeous HD makeover. More than just receiving a fresh coat of pixie dust, though, "Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse" has been crafted from the ground up. The core concept and characters--Mickey must still rescue Minnie from meanie Mizrabel--retain the appeal of the original, but Sega’s promising plenty of new surprises for the mouse ears-wearing masses.

THIS IS PART OF MTV MULTIPLAYER'S 10 MOST ANTICIPATED VIDEO GAMES OF THE FALL! CHECK 'EM ALL OUT HERE.

Prior to Ubisoft's visit to New York City a number of weeks ago, I had seen plenty of "Watch_Dogs." Via the same means that most others have; via YouTube and the like. And the demo I witnessed firsthand shared many similarities with all the rest, not surprisingly; it too was intended to illustrate protagonist Aiden Pearce's hacking acumen.

But there was one subtle, yet very clear cut difference; each one of those highlighted the sexy aspect of Aiden's life. Either lurking the shadows, or bold face inserting himself in the lives of rich and powerful individuals, as well as partaking in some of their spoils. That last part is usually automatic; why not help yourself to what they have, given that they probably won't notice it.

Whereas the demo I saw had Aiden, not at some trendy club in the middle of the night, where the action is, but in broad daylight and in the suburbs, where life is rough and tumble. Where everyday is a struggle just to scrape by, let alone survive.
