Angry Birds Christmas

For a company that said they would not be producing an "Angry Birds" sequel, Rovio Mobile seems to have begun a new tradition of releasing new "Birds" games for major holidays. They stormed the App Store's sales charts with "Angry Birds Halloween" in October, and now "Angry Birds Christmas" has been confirmed for December.

iPad Game Center 4.2

Apple's Game Center launch back in September left iPads out in the cold. A lot of fun Game Center-compatible titles showed up that were playable on iPad as well, but it took Apple's long awaited iOS 4.2 update today for the iPad to actually allow those games to feed into Game Center's leaderboards and achievements while they're being played in tablet mode.

Apple, meanwhile, is hoping that enhanced gaming functionality, together with iOS multitasking, iTunes TV show rentals, free Find My iPhone use, AirPlay and AirPrint will turn their device into a more compelling sell for the holidays.

Rage Mutant Bash TV

id Software really, really wants to bring first person shooters to the iPhone. They've already released three of them, not counting their first-person RPG spin-offs, and now they've brought their new IP, "RAGE" to the platform in the form of "Mutant Bash TV." It's a remarkable visual feat, but I'm still getting the impression that id is trying to shoehorn a genre onto a platform that simply can't handle it.

It's that time of year again. Starting next week, the nation will be inundated by the holiday spirit, and you've got to start thinking about what to buy your friend, neighbor or significant other. If they're a gamer and you're not, the prospect might be tricky, so I thought I'd give you some suggestions to set you on the right path.

Since you don't want to reveal your forthcoming gift, I'm also including a subtle question to ask the giftee before you make your purchase to confirm that it is indeed the right game for them. I do this because I care.

Rage iPhone

John Carmack has been talking about doing something "Rage"-oriented on the iPhone for quite awhile, and this year at QuakeCon he said that he wanted to have a "Rage" game out before 2010 ended. Well, he seems to have reached his goal, as id Software's new FPS has already slipped into the Australian App Store Store in both regular and HD versions and Carmack predicted that it would be on sale by Thursday.

Apple Clock

Update: Apparently The Beatles catalog will be available on iTunes, which is what the announcement was about. Oops.

Oh, Apple. It seems like every two weeks they've got a new doodad or thingamagibbit that's going to make your day a bit brighter, and tomorrow is no different. The official Apple site is teasing an iTunes announcement which seems to have something to do with clocks.

You may recall that Apple's had some issues with clocks in the last few weeks. iPhone and iPod Touch alarm clocks, for example, sorta forgot to adjust for daylight savings time, which resulted in millions of people showing up late for work all over the world. It was dubbed "The Day The People Slept In" by, well, me. Seems that this is the sorta thing that could be fixed with an iTunes update of iOS. Perhaps the launch of iOS 4.2, which has already entered Gold Master?

Space Miner Blast

Venan Arcade has been quietly putting out some of the best iPhone games the market has to offer. Their first game, "Space Miner: Space Ore Bust," managed to meld "Asteroids"-style gameplay with RPG-like character customization in the form of persistent ship upgrades. Next up was "Ninjatown: Trees of Doom," one of those never-ending survival games where you have to climb a massive tree as characters from the popular plush series. Both games have been installed on my iPhone for months now, which is saying a lot, considering I'm very anti-clutter. They're charming, well-made and tremendously fun to play.

iMuffs

Apple could be offering some wireless headphone alternatives for iPhone, iPod and iPad users at some point in the near future. The company is rumored to have acquired Wi-Gear, the maker of iMuffs, which would give them a ready-to-use arm for putting out Bluetooth enabled ear pieces.

Infinity Blade

A few days ago, I spoke with Donald Mustard of Chair Entertainment, about the "Shadow Complex" developer's next title, "Infinity Blade." In the interview, Mustard talked about how important it was for the team to make a realistic sword fighting game, using touch controls. You can sort of imagine what he's talking about, but imagining is a little harder than seeing, which is what you're about to do:
