Super QuickHook

During the chaos of E3, a game released on the iPhone called "Super QuickHook." The spiritual successor to one of my favorite iPhone games, "Hook Champ," "Super QuickHook" updates the gameplay and graphics in a variety of ways and should be enjoyed by all.

The Highs

SNES-Style Graphics
"Hook Champ" took more of an 8-bit approach to its graphics. "Super QuickHook" is much more detailed, with larger character sprites and more varied environments. It has a pixelated charm that reminds one of those classic platformers of the early '90s, and the menu system only helps to complete the effect.

EA Sports Active 2

Ever since Microsoft made their Kinect announcement on Sunday, fitness games have been popping up out of the ground like the living dead. Just today, Ubisoft broke out "Your Shape: Fitness Evolved" at Microsoft's E3 media event, and even Spice Girl Mel B has a game coming out. "EA Sports Active 2" is somewhat of a known quantity, however, even if it only because official for Kinect today.

Fruit Ninja

Every once in a while, I blindly cruise the App Store looking for something to kill a few hours. Last night I happened upon "Fruit Ninja," which had a 4.5/5 star ranking over several thousand reviewers. And now I know why. It's a dollar very well spent.

There's not a whole lot to digest. You're a ninja, you hate fruit. Your sensei tosses fruit into the air and you slice it with your finger. Slicing three or more fruit in a single swipe results in bonus points. The whole title is wrapped in an awesome ninja-style aesthetic, and the fruit slice into satisfying, 3D halves.

And it's a dollar. Buy it. If you hate it, you can punch me in the face.

FarmVille for iPhone

Apple won't let just anyone share the stage with Steve Jobs, so when they let Zynga CEO Mark Pincus get up to talk at the Worldwide Developers Conference presentation where Jobs announced the iPhone 4 today, you knew something important had to be in store. Assuming you consider "FarmVille" to be important, Pincus did not disappoint.

iPhone 4

If you've been living under a rock for the last few hours, let me be the first to tell you that Apple has a new iPhone in the works and it's coming out soon. Very soon. This month, in fact! Since there's a lot of info floating about in a crazy tornado of techie lust, I'll try to break down everything iPhone 4-related into handy bite-sized chunks. And away we go!

In just a few minutes, Apple will be kicking off their much-anticipated WWDC 2010 press conference, which will highlight the next new iPhone, and will likely reveal the date of iPhone OS 4.0. Super QuickHook

You may recall that one of my favorite iPhone games of all time (read: the last three years) is "Hook Champ," which blends the swinging gameplay of "Bionic Commando" with racing and character upgrade mechanics to forge a horribly addictive time sink. The guys behind "Hook Champ" have taken a break from releasing level packs in recent months in order to focus their efforts on "Super QuickHook," the spiritual successor to "Hook Champ."

Sonic Colors

Sega's PR teams have been moving at Sonic-like speeds this past week, announcing "Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1" for the iPhone, as well as a whole new game for Nintendo's Wii and DS with "Sonic Colors." Only time will tell if either of these announcements prove to be as controversial among Sega fans as the initial protest-sparking "Sonic 4" unveiling did, but you can't knock Sega for holding back on their little blue mascot this year.

Pac-Man Reborn

So "Pac-Man Championship Edition" and whatever Avi Arad is announcing at E3 are about to get a lot more company in the Pac-universe. I haven't wrapped my mind around how it will be possible to play a Pac-game on Twitter yet, but that's one of the services "Pac-Man Reborn" will reportedly provide.

"Reborn" has just been announced for Twitter, iPhone and other mobile devices in Japan, according to a post on Siliconera. Beta testing will apparently begin this week, and after that, over 300 customizations will hit the fan as widespread gobbling commences in the largest demolition derby of tiny pie charts ever seen — or so I presume from the limited information provided.

Prince of Persia Classic

Jake Gyllenhaal will be introducing the Prince of Persia IP to a whole new audience when "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" hits theaters at the end of May, and Ubisoft has a new game ready to accompany him with "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands." They apparently have a new iPhone and iPod touch port of "Prince of Persia Classic" ready as well, however. The game will require some size and control retooling, but console gamers should recognize the name from Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
