Death Road to Canada

By the time this post goes live, Rocketcat Games will have far outpaced the $25,000 Kickstarter goal they set for their new game, "Death Road to Canada." Here's why you should care: if you play your cards right, you can teach a pack of dogs to drive a station wagon.

Which is awesome, obviously.

gamecase

iOS 7 has gotten plenty of attention, mostly the tossing out of skeuomorphism, in favor of a new flat design, plus its numerous other bells and whistles. Except for one.

Apple's updated mobile OS also has brand new hooks in place for third party controller support. There's been a few on the market already, but the underlying frameworks (and therefore the controllers themselves), has never been stellar.

But all that is set to change, and it would appear that the GameCase is the first one out of the game. The first of many, one is willing to wager.

AngryBirds_StarWars2_Keyart_Tentative_05_1024x576

"Angry Birds," the poster child for right time and right place, conquered the small screen space a few years back with simple gameplay and cute characters at a perfect price. While it quickly invaded everyone's smart phone and was fun to play in short bursts, it was a pretty shallow game yet rewarding when you finally nailed a 3 star rating. Basically it was the Tetris analogue for your internet phone's Game Boy (thanks, Matt, for that little bit of plagiarism inspiration :-) ). Everyone installed and quickly became addicted to slinging birds at evil pigs.

As with anything that becomes larger than itself, eventually an opportunity for cross-branding emerges. Enter 'Angry Birds Star Wars,' a clever rebranded spin-off transforming the classic sci-fi/fantasy heroes and villains into their avian and porcine doppelgängers. It was a fun offshoot for fans of both IPs to take a bathroom break and play a few rounds of physics based puzzle solving. Of course, anything Star Wars can't only have one episode, so Rovio obliged to create a second venture.

Fortunately, "Angry birds Star Wars II" is much, much better than it's movie counterpart.

mutant-football-league-01

Today marked the launch of the "Mutant Football League" Kickstarter, a spiritual successor to EA's 16-bit classic "Mutant League Football" from series creator Michael Mendheim. The Kickstarter campaign, which is seeking $750,000 to complete the game for iOS and Android devices--with stretch goals potentially bringing it to other platforms--resurrects a property that's been out of the public eye for some time now, albeit with a very vocal following.

But why go it alone without EA? And isn't Mendheim courting conflict with the publisher by using a concept (and name) so similar to the original?

Disney's The Little Mermaid will making a special, limited engagement return to theaters across the country tomorrow night. No doubt this is aimed at folks who saw the movie on the big screen as a child, back in 1989, and who have since had children of their own.

Kids today often have their faces buried in an iPad, and movies are a great way to have them look up for a tiny bit at least. Though Disney is actively encouraging families to bring said iOS devices to the theater.

Why? Because of the The Little Mermaid: Second Screen Live.
