Death Road to Canada

By the time this post goes live, Rocketcat Games will have far outpaced the $25,000 Kickstarter goal they set for their new game, "Death Road to Canada." Here's why you should care: if you play your cards right, you can teach a pack of dogs to drive a station wagon.

Which is awesome, obviously.

Alongside the launch of "GTA V", Rockstar released a companion iOS app called iFruit, which allows one to customize in-game vehicles and take care of Franklin's best friend, among other things.

Well, those with Android phones who wish to partake in mindless frivolities will have to wait for Rockstar to port the app themselves, and it's hard to say when that might happen.

Though one thing is for certain: no matter what, do not download and install the iFruits app that currently resides on the Google Play store, because it's a down and dirty, no good for nothing fake.

mutant-football-league-01

Today marked the launch of the "Mutant Football League" Kickstarter, a spiritual successor to EA's 16-bit classic "Mutant League Football" from series creator Michael Mendheim. The Kickstarter campaign, which is seeking $750,000 to complete the game for iOS and Android devices--with stretch goals potentially bringing it to other platforms--resurrects a property that's been out of the public eye for some time now, albeit with a very vocal following.

But why go it alone without EA? And isn't Mendheim courting conflict with the publisher by using a concept (and name) so similar to the original?

gentlemen

Gentleman! is an iOS/Android game that is designed specifically for tablets and it only supports local multiplayer. Yet, even with such constraints (most people play their iPhone or Android games on a phone, and usually in the absence of friends), it has managed to sell 1,114 copies on the iPad. Quite impressive for something that's also a bit on the pricey side, at five bucks.

As for the Android version, only 144 copies have been sold. Yet, according to developers Lucky Frame, there are over 50,000 copies of the game being played on devices that run Google's operating system. All of them pirated.

Palpatine

It's not easy being an old school Star Wars fan.

Kids today actually enjoy Episodes 1-3, J.J. Abrams's upcoming trilogy will more than likely resemble his take on Star Trek, lens flares and all, plus the list of goods that lazily cashes in on the franchise is beyond mind-numbingly long.

So here's yet another thing to get upset over: Ian McDiarmid, best known for his portrayal of Emperor Palpatine, is now the star of a brand new trailer for Angry Birds Star Wars 2.

Once "PlayStation All-Stars" was yanked from the hands of original developer SuperBot Entertainment, who had big plans, and given to Santa Monica Studio, who later made it be known that they had zero interest in doing much with it, like releasing the Journey/Gravity Rush content that the previous owners were prepping, the writing appeared on the wall for Sony's Smash Bros wannabe.

And the final nail in the coffin has just been hit: "PlayStation All-Stars" has just been reborn as a free to play app for iOS and Android, one that is designed entirely to promote Coke Zero.

Game makers are constantly trying to do something different, something innovate on smart phones. Not only is the marketplace becoming increasingly crowded, the inherent challenges of creating an engaging, interactive experience on a device that's often or not just one big screen, sans buttons, is still a major hurdle for most.

So you have to at least give credit here credit is due; Carrot Pop's Send Me To Heaven is at least different. Very different. Enough for it to be banned from the Apple App Store. And for reasons that many might believe to be somewhat reasonable.

Cell phone game visuals have made significant strides in recent years, coming very close to what we see on high end PCs and the like. But very soon, they'll be on equal footing.

NVIDIA has just unveiled their next generation mobile processor, called Project Logan. It's a GPU that's based upon the Kepler architecture that the graphics vendor currently produces for desktops and notebooks. One that has been reengineered to work on smart phones and tablets.

Real talk: my idea of a good time is getting day drunk on a beach. D-Pad Studios, however, use their vacation time like productive members of society: when the team decided they needed a break from developing the much-ballyhooed "Owlboy," they spent their free time developing "Savant" instead of getting gross airbrush t-shirts at an Alvin's Island in Panama City Beach.
