NPD Group numbers are in for January 2009, and while the overall narrative remains the same -- Nintendo leading the charge, with "Wii Fit" selling 777,000 copies -- there were signs of growth for everyone, as the industry saw 1.33 billion in sales, up from 1.18 billion in 2008. Read more...

Defying industry trends, "Guitar Hero" publisher Activision Blizzard reported a 20% revenue increase in 2008 during an earnings call this afternoon, and reported zero debt and 3.1 billion dollars in cash at year-end, quite contrary to what we've seen from other publishers like THQ and Electronic Arts.
"We enter 2009 with the finest product slate in our company's history," said Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick in a press release about the earnings results, "and an organization properly sized and resourced to compete alongside the many new entrants and existing competitors in our industry. During the year, we will continue to employ our proven strategies that have worked so well for us over the last decade."

The "Final Fantasy" publisher is in hot water today, reports Bloomberg, after Square Enix stock fell 11% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the lowest for Square Enix in five years, after delaying a report on its earnings results by a week. Read more...

Change is coming to THQ, according to comments by CEO Brian Farrell during an investor call about the publisher's year-end financial results; in addition to cutting hundreds of employees and reducing its studio count, Farrell said THQ would be reducing the number of hardcore games it creates. In news that should shock no one, Nintendo dominated December shopping, according to just released figures from the NPD Group, with the DS selling 3.04 million units and Wii moving 2.15 million units, while Microsoft pushed 1.44 million Xbox 360s and Sony sold 726,000 PlayStation 3s.
