Kiki Wolfkill, who has one of the coolest names in the video game industry, and Frank O’Connor from 343 Industries took the stage at D.I.C.E. to talk about the challenges of building a brand-new studio, and taking over the massive "Halo" franchise.

O’Connor began by explaining the daunting challenges of building that new studio. The first challenge was to build the studio itself, while the second was to take over a beloved franchise that a lot of people had developed a deep love and appreciation for. That brings a tremendous amount of pressure to a team and a product, when you are expected to create something that the wants to be great right out of the box.

Communicating to the wide "Halo" audience was a new challenge for the company, which really began to stretch its legs when they released the "Halo: The Fall" of Reach novel back in 2001. According to O’Connor, that was pure opportunism on their part, but it opened up the transmedia options for the franchise as a strategy for communicating the nature of the universe and the backstory to the audience. All but two of their novels have been New York Times bestsellers, which has expanded the property beyond just the people who play the game.

We last saw the big MC going into hibernation after effectively eliminating the galactic threat, The Flood and sending the Covenant reeling to the stars. Since then we've had two prequels and a side story set in the same universe adding more to the fiction and a little bit to gameplay. After a few years in the deep freeze, can 343 Industries defrost Master Chief and pick up to the monumental weight that Bungie left behind with their take on "Halo"?

In a word- yes. 343 Industries certainly made a straight-up Halo-ass Halo game, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Picking up where Bungie left off would make any seasoned developer more than a little hot under the collar, so to distill the soul of the franchise and add a few tweaks to make the latest entry fresh is impressive by itself. Another word could be "safe", story aside the formula Bungie created way back for the first "Halo" is largely unchanged. Still, fans should be more than pleased for the next numbered installment to the beloved series.

You may recall that last week hosted a small gathering of funny book enthusiasts in San Diego’s downtown convention center. Among the artists, writers, celebrities, and steampunk Batmans, a few game developers saw fit to present a few demos to the heaving masses. One of these games was a little known title tucked away at the Hard Rock Hotel’s second floor lounge in Microsoft’s game room. If you can’t guess by now that this is a terrible attempt to build up some kind of satire and the fact of that's a Spartan MK 4 image above this very paragraph, and… uh, something…  anyway…  WHATSTHATOHMYGODHALO4!!!111!

Really, I would keep this more mysterious but if you’re already a fan of the legendary green armored space marine, particularly the multiplayer portion, then you’re not kidding anyone by playing coy. You’re going to pick this up in Autumn and you’re going to love every minute of it. Whelp, demo impressions for Halo 4 multiplayer done. It's Halo but more. Fine, for those that need a bit more convincing read on for my experience at San Diego.

Without exaggeration, the Halo franchise has been one of Xbox's biggest system sellers.  After the announcement that Bungie Studios would be hanging up their green power armor, many gamers have been left wondering what's in store for the Halo universe. We got our answer last E3 with a short debut trailer showing off a newly awakened Master Chief answering a call to action against an unknown and imposing enemy. Since then 343 has taken up the mantle for the next proper franchise entry, ‘Halo 4', and news has been slowly trickling out as it nears its fall launch. We got our quick look at the Chief but one of the best things about Halo, and its sequels, was its amazing sound and score.

News broke this morning, via HaloWaypoint, that Neil Davidge is scoring ‘Halo 4'. You probably know Mr. Davidge best as producing and co-writing several albums for Massive Attack, but he's also worked on several high profile television shows and movies such as ‘Clash of the Titans', although this will be his first video game entry. Recently, Mr. Davidge took a few moments out of his busy schedule to talk to Multiplayer about his love for Halo and how you'll experience the game through your ears. We also have a couple of behind the scenes clips that show a bit of the work that goes into scoring a game of this magnitude. Check out the full interview and clips after the jump.
