Ducking behind cover, I start unloading round after round into an approaching Locust soldier. He's wounded, but I quickly realize that my opponent is bearing down on me at an unfortunate rate. I stand up, ready for the imminent melee encounter, frantically mashing down the B-button. The familiar whirring sound of a gun-mounted chainsaw just barely begins before I realize it's too late: the man himself, Cliff Bleszinski, has just crammed a Retro Lancer blade through my gizzard.
After spending a few nights with the "Gears of War 3" multiplayer beta, I'm convinced that the game's competitive component will prove appealing to veteran fans and newcomers alike.

UPDATE: This story was originally entitled: "Activision Says 'Call of Duty' PS3 Beta Details 'Coming Soon'." But Activision has informed us that their statement may have been premature. All details about any betas for "Call of Duty," including an answer to whether there will be a PS3 beta or not, will be released at a later date.
If you took today's news at its word, PlayStation 3 owners were being left out of the "Call of Duty: World at War" multiplayer beta.
Xbox 360 and PC players are allowed access in October. Last year, only Xbox 360 gamers were allowed access to the "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" multiplayer beta.
But Sony fans need not panic just yet. MTV Multiplayer asked Activision whether PS3 "Call of Duty" fans were being left in the cold, and were told to be a little more patient.
"We will have more information on that coming soon," said a company representative.
While not a definitive answer just yet, it does provide some hope for non-Xbox 360, non-PC shooter fans in search of new perks.

Thirty seconds into my first match of the "Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix" beta, I remembered what I loved so much about the "Street Fighter" games - the single player.
For years I have played different version after different version of the tried and true classic "Street Fighter II" but I'm still not very good. I bow down to anyone with a modicum of skill, but I still love to play. It's always been a fun, yet challenging title, and after spending some time playing the beta it is pretty evident that the newest version will be a welcome addition to the series of sequels.
How different is it from the game many of us played years ago?
