Later today I will post my list of my 10 favorite gaming moments of 2008. I've done the same thing each of the last three years.

These lists do not list my favorite games of the year. Instead they list the moments in games I least want to forget: high points of 40 hour treks, spectacular surprises in silly little pet training and puzzle games.

These are the moments when games allow great things to happen -- allow you to make great things happen -- that any other form of entertainment can't hope to accomplish.

Here are my lists for 2005, 1006 and 2007. Ready for some nostalgia? Read More...

If you didn't catch the annual Spike Video Game Awards on TV Sunday night, we rounded up a few images from stock supplier photo Getty Images to show you what you missed from the star-studded event.

Make the jump to see photos of host Jack Black, various celebrities (Megan Fox, 50 Cent, Mike Tyson), game developers (Hideo Kojima, Will Wright, Ted Price) and nearly-nude models covered in body paint (yet again). But there were also some men sporting just tighty whities to balance it out this year. Take a look, if you dare... Read More...

The Spike Video Game Awards ceremony was held last night and "Grand Theft Auto IV" emerged as the big winner.

I was one of the judges, so you can credit or blame me for the list of winners below. I haven't compared it to my ballot yet, but I can tell you that I voted for a different game for VGA GOTY. Still, not a bad list of winners!

(All nominees listed. Winners noted in italics.)

Game of the Year
Gears of War 2
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
*Grand Theft Auto IV*
LittleBigPlanet
Fallout 3

2007 Video Game Music Awards Models -- They Presented The Winners By Having The Winners Painted On Them
On Tuesday we reported that Jack Black will host the Spike Video Game Awards, an event that will host gameplay footage premieres of some major titles.

But, you asked, what about the painted naked women? How could they not be returning? I got an answer. Read More...

I heard there were going to be major announcements and surprises at Spike's Video Game Awards on December 14th. I was told there'd be major appearances -- even after I told the organizers that I, a VGA judge, would not be able to attend.

So we're getting... Jack Black as a host. World premiere gameplay footage from Black's "Brutal Legend" game. "God of War III" gameplay footage of some sort. And more. On Spike on December 14th.

Plus the winners of Awards I voted in. Not bad!

'Braid'

Could you ever pick a Nintendo DS game as Game Of The Year?

Would you ever pick a web browser game? Should a critic consider a game you played on your iPhone? An XBLA game?

This question of whether a small game could be Game of the Year came up earlier this week in the Multiplayer comments section of my VGA post.

Reader "withaneight" wrote:

With games so many fantastic games available as direct download i am surprised to see none on the ballot. Was there no place for Castle Crashers or Braid on the list game of the year list? I think they were both better than Metal Gear and GTA4. I was just wondering if there is a reason for this; are you not allowed to nominate non-retail games, even if they are rated by the ESRB?

To which I replied: Read More...

I may not really take your advice. But maybe I will.

I'm a judge for Spike TV's Video Game Awards, the only annual televised awards show that allows me to serve as one of their judges. A few weeks ago, I had to submit a list of nominations (I'd like to think that "No More Heroes" voice-acting nod down there is just because of me.)

My ballot of winners is due tomorrow. Take a look at the list. Frankly, I'm not sure which game gets my Game of the Year vote. The winners will be announced when the show airs on December 14. Decisions, decisions...

Unofficial MTV E3 Judging GavelThe nominations for the Game Critics Awards Best of E3 were announced last night. "Fallout 3," "Gears of War 2," "Little Big Planet," and "Mirror's Edge" made the shortlist for Best of Show.

I was one of 36 members of the gaming media who judged and voted this year for the best games of E3. All games had to be presented at E3 and been playable for judges. Last week, I submitted a ballot of my picks for nominees. Everyone's votes were weighted in order to produce the final nominees list.

I have until late Thursday to cast my vote for the winner for each of these categories. I've got most of my picks selected but am still unsure of a few.

(The full list follows, as do my notes on which of my picks for nominations are missing from the list, including the yanked Best Simulation category.)

Uwe BollNothing, actually. Uwe Boll, the infamous director behind such works as "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale" and "BloodRayne," told Multiplayer in an e-mail that he didn't attend Los Angeles film celebration this past Sunday.

In fact, Boll has never attended the Oscars, nor does he plan to change that. Does that explain the ceremony's lowest ratings in history? Maybe not, but in addition to simply not living alongside much of Hollywood's elite in the Los Angeles area, Boll is currently busy completing production of his latest project, an adaptation of Ubisoft's "Far Cry."

Anyone who followed my work at 1UP likely realized I'm an unabashed fan of Boll's work, albeit one could argue it's for all the wrong reasons, if you're interested in the kind of movie that's nominated for an Oscar. Boll's films have a certain intangible appeal.

Oh, and for those that were wondering if Boll thought anyone was snubbed by the Academy this past weekend, worry not. "They made good choices," he said.
