This week we've got releases big and small, but do their covers measure up to our standards of clarity, originality and amusement? Read on as we judge "Skate 2," "SimAnimals" and more by their box art.

"Skate 2" (Xbox 360, PS3)
What the Box Tells Us: The box shows us two skate decks with various scrapes and scratches.
Pros: It's simple, and the dual boards with the "2" on it is a more original way of saying "sequel." And the wear and tear implies there are street skaters who've done it all.
Cons: The banged-up boards may also imply that your player character is going to get hurt. A lot.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Star Ocean: Second Evolution" (PSP)
What the Box Tells Us: There's the earth in space.
Pros: "Star Ocean" is another way of saying "outer space," so it works.
Cons: It's exactly like the other PSP "Star Ocean" cover for "First Departure," only the earth is on the left side instead of the right. Lazy! (And boring.)
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"SimAnimals" (Wii, DS)
What the Box Tells Us: All kinds of animals -- bears, skunks, deer, bunnies and more -- peacefully co-exist in the forest. That is, until a disembodied hand reaches out from the sky and plucks them from the earth.
Cons: There's a creepy gloved hand taking the animals God-knows-where to do God-knows-what.
Pros: Since it's a "Sims" game, logic dictates that you're God. Plus, I like the composition of the cute, confused bear in the foreground and the sinister hand doings its deeds in the background.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Ultimate Shooting Collection" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: Planes soar through the air, shoot missiles at each other and, sometimes, explode.
Pros: Mid-air explosions. Check.
Cons: But nothing about this says "ultimate," "shooting" or "collection" to me. I'm confused.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Deer Drive" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: Two hunters, one armed with a rifle and the other holding binoculars and pointing, are about to be run over by a deer being chased by a bear. In the background, ducks fly erratically and a cougar (?) chases another deer.
Pros: This cover has everything. The animal kingdom is running wild, and hapless humans don't know what to do (it kind of reminds me of "Cabela's Dangeous Hunts 2009").
Cons: I don't know anything about hunting, but I'm pretty sure if a deer or other wild animal gets that close, you should've been shooting at it already (and not just pointing at it). Bewildered hunters not necessary.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"The Lord of the Rings: Conquest" (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, DS)
What the Box Tells Us: It's a licensed game using the likenesses and the aesthetics of some of the most widely seen and loved films of this generation.
Pros: The epic battles of the "Lord of the Rings" movies were some of the most memorable in cinematic history. Probably one of the few instances where a movie license helps gameplay expectations instead of hurts.
Cons: There's not much here to differentiate it upon first glance from other "Lord of the Rings" games.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Inkheart" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: Actor Brendan Fraser is on the cover holding a book, while a unicorn, some ladies, a fire-breather and a guy with facial scars float above him.
Pros: With the appearance of Brendan Fraser, I can tell it's a licensed game.
Cons: With the appearance of Brendan Fraser, I can tell it's a licensed game. Also, I know nothing about the movie; it just looks like a less cool version of "Neverending Story" to me.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Moon" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: A man wearing a spacesuit and wielding a space gun floats above the moon, as evidenced by the earth reflecting in his helmet.
Pros: It looks like a comic book cover. Plus, it's simple, pretty and fits the theme without being too obvious.
Cons: I'd be hard-pressed to find any. Perhaps the quote from Hardcore Gamer at the bottom might detract those who don't consider themselves "hardcore gamers."
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Jumble Madness" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: There are five addictive puzzle games, as seen in newspapers, which are spread all over the front of the box.
Pros: It's not just a clever title. The box art is literally jumble madness.
Cons: But it's too much madness! It's too busy, yet at the same time boring because it shows pages of black-and-white newspaper. (And soon the kids will go, "What's a newspaper"?)
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Neighborhood Games" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: All the things you used to do in your neighborhood as a child -- play football and basketball, shoot slingshots and water pistols, fly your model airplane -- are now collected into 24 "family games" that you can play indoors!
Pros: It shows a lot of different children playing a lot of different games.
Cons: Perhaps I was severely deprived as a child but I never played any of these games (I just rode my bike or went swimming). So I'm not entirely sure how these make for interesting mini-games.
Love it or Leave It: Leave it.

"Hotel for Dogs" (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, PC, Wii, DS)
What the Box Tells Us: There are all kinds of dogs in this game based on the upcoming film based on the novel.
Pros: There's a nice variety of dogs shown.
Cons: Where's the hotel? It's just a bunch of canines sitting next to luggage. One is even inside the luggage. This must be some kind of one-star dog hotel where suitcases are used as beds.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Paws & Claws: Pet Resort" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: This place isn't just for the dogs; it's also a place where cats, bunnies and parrots can enjoy reclining by the pool.
Pros: Animals wearing sunglasses and Hawaiian shirts can be pretty funny...
Cons: But can parrots and bunnies even swim? Where's the life guard?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Paws & Claws: Pampered Pets" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: As if sending your pet to a resort wasn't pampering them enough, there's this game, which seems to define "pampered" as giving your cat or dog a bubble bath and putting them in a bathrobe.
Pros: Adding accessories, like a headband or necklace, does a good job of saying "pampered." Because who seriously accessorizes their pet like that? Really?
Cons: The Photoshopped animals don't look more or less pampered than those featured in any other pet-based game in the market. They might even be a little sad. Hard to tell.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"My Dream Job: Babysitter" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: Forget doctor, lawyer or astronaut: A girl can now finally have the job of her dreams -- babysitting seven kids.
Pros: The game looks to be fun for its target demographic -- until the runaway baby carriage hits that stray beach ball.
Cons: Something seems off about the proportions of the children. The baby on the bottom left looks humongous, as does the "toddler" with his hands in his pockets. No one said anything about taking care of giant kids.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Ten Pin Alley 2" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: You can throw bowling balls at people! "You" being a one-legged contortionist.
Pros: It's definitely bowling, no doubt about that. And it looks like the designers tried to do something different...
Cons: But is that pin humongous or is that man tiny? Why is a bowling ball being hurled at him? And I only count seven pins on this cover, not 10!
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"From the Abyss" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: In this game, pants aren't needed. Neither are shirts or armor.
Pros: Like most gamers, I'm all for badass female warriors.
Cons: But I don't care who you are — two belts don't equal pants.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"My Secret World" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: Not much, because it is a secret world after all. Here, it looks like girls can "create, express and share" their secrets. Various symbols give clues about what the secrets might be: a cell phone, a key, some hearts, and "?!?"
Pros: All this secrecy causes intrigue. What could a trio of dolled-up, pre-teen girls be giggling about?
Cons: How is it your "secret world" if two friends are looking over your shoulder? Friends, get your own DS and your own copy of "My Secret World."
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Air Traffic Chaos" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: The "chaos" of an air traffic controller's job -- keeping planes from crashing into each other -- would make a fun DS game. I mean, look at that guy: he's got a huge, shiny grin on his face as he proudly proclaims, "I am an air traffic controller!" You know, in case you weren't sure who he was.
Pros: It makes a seemingly mundane job look like it could be fun.
Cons: The cover sends mixed messages. Why is the guy smiling amidst the "chaos"?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"AMF Bowling Pinbusters!" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: It's bowling, but with your favorite archetypes. Like Tough Guy With Mohawk, Giant Scottish Guy Who Is Probably Wearing A Kilt, Geeky Vampire Kid, Asian Girl With Headphones/Earmuffs or Attractive Woman Whose Cleavage Is Covered By The ESRB Rating. There's an avatar for everyone!
Pros: So bad, it's good.
Cons: But still bad.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: A sinister-looking man wearing a creepy green mask sneaks around on rooftops and holds out jewelry… to perhaps entice unsuspecting young women? The perfect game for daughters. Maybe it will also tell girls to please accept candy from strangers and feel free to step into their vehicles at any time. And leave bedroom windows wide open too, while you're at it.
Pros: The green mask is hard to bypass at the game store.
Cons: But the inherent creepiness takes a hot shower or two to remove.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Rock Blast" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: You can "blast" multi-colored "rocks" with... other multi-colored "rocks." It's also "casual."
Pros: If you're uncertain what the title "Rock Blast" entails, well... there ya go.
Cons: If you're uncertain as to how this game is actually fun, this cover comes up short.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Little League World Series Baseball 2008" (Wii, DS)
What the Box Tells Us: The pitcher is cross-eyed, the umpire is cross-eyed (angry too?), the catcher looks sleepy and the batter is about to wet his pants in fear. No one on this cover is having any fun.
Pros: In other words, it portrays being in real Little League.
Cons: If that's true, why would you want to bring this home?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Alone in the Dark" (Xbox 360, PS2, Wii, PC)
What the Box Tells Us: This box art is full of mixed messages. For one, it's not dark out (is it snowing?), and even in the slashed image across the box, there's a bright light shining. Two, the guy who looks sort of like Keanu Reeves doesn't seem to be alone. I see two other people who may or may not be him; one presumably hit by a car (who's driving?) and another shadowy figure walking in the distance. "Alone in the Dark"? More like "Being Chased By People Trying To Kill Me In Broad Daylight."
Pros: It's good to see Keanu getting some work again.
Cons: The title seems to be a misnomer. Oops!
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Purr Pals" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: See these newborn kittens? They have a look of utter fright on their faces. Why? Because they are about to get murdered. Murdered, and then baked into bread. If you read the box closely, the bottom text says, "40 adorable kitten breads to choose from." That’s right — breads. It's a kitten-bread-baking game!
Pros: Mmmm, kitten bread. Great with butter and strawberry jam.
Cons: PETA, you better get on this one.
Love It or Leave It: I can't help but love it. (Sorry, kittens.)

"Fable II: Limited Collector's Edition" (Xbox 360)
What the Box Tells Us: When you first receive the box for the collector's edition of "Fable II," you'll see the protagonist crouching on a gray-white background. But then open it up and remove the cardboard…
Pros: And it's like a whole new cover! The box art is sideways and features the good guy on the front and the bad guy on the back. Kind of like a mullet.
Cons: The cool sideways box art is hidden under the boring cardboard cover.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Civil War Mysteries: Secrets of the North and South" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: A game about the Civil War sounds boring in theory but this cover is intriguing. Why are there floating keys? Is that a tornado on the balcony? Why is the house on fire? Who are these strange apparitions? What secrets do they hold? ... Lincoln's hat was used to store snacks? Robert E. Lee loved New England Clam Chowder? Do tell.

"Mirror's Edge" (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
What the Box Tells Us: A woman with a trendy haircut stands above a city full of skyscrapers.
Cons: Trendy or not, this lady looks like she put on her mascara without looking into any "mirror's edge."
Pros: Featuring neither men or guns (or men holding guns), this box is not like the others.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Supreme Ruler 2020" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: Sure, it's another war strategy game, but instead of showing me tiny tanks amid some gunfire, "Supreme Ruler 2020" goes "supreme" by depicting the biggest blaze Washington D.C.'s ever seen since the War of 1812 (or the "Independence Day" movie).
Pros: Michael Bay, eat your heart out.
Cons: My retinas are burning.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Band Manager" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: A portly, hairy man wearing sunglasses talks on his cell phone while holding a lit cigar. He’s surrounded by stacks of money.
Pros: I didn’t really know there was a band manager stereotype until I saw this box art — and now that I see it, it's spot-on.
Cons: But spot-on for a boy band manager. If this were any more specific, Lou Pearlman could sue… if he wasn't in jail.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Madden NFL 09 All-Play" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: The Wii version of "Madden NFL 09" isn't like the other versions, where Brett Favre's eyes are bulging as he's about to make an all-important pass. No, instead they've got Brett laughing and pointing and having a grand ol' time.
Pros: What's he laughing and pointing at? [His former team] The Packers? The other cover versions of the game for being so boring and identical?
Cons: This cover is pretty ridiculous and silly. Not for hardcore Madden fans.
Love It or Leave It: I'm not a hardcore Madden fan. Love it.

"Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: A pair of mouthless, weapon-wielding mushroom men make their way through the treacherous grass, giant snake in tow.
Cons: Are the mushroom men the bad guys or the good guys? Are they going to destroy humanity as we know it?
Pros: It reminds me of movie posters from '50s sci-fi flicks, like "Them!" (though with less carnage). Still, a very cool aesthetic.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009" (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: An angry, angry bear is busting through some trees to lunge at an unsuspecting orange-vested hunter.
Pros: It's a cover that will stop and make you take notice: The bear looks ferocious, down to the flood of saliva dripping from its jaws.
Cons: Just who is doing the hunting here?
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"James Pond: Codename Robocod" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: Nothing that makes sense: A smiling fish in robot armor is holding a gun while chattering teeth, a cheeseburger and a flaming punchbuggy litter the scene.
Pros: I mean, it has a fish holding a gun. And penguins. It also somehow combines James Bond and Robocop in one game.
Cons: I have absolutely no idea what is going on.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Wordfish" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: It's an "outrageously fun word game." Three fish float by amidst a few bubble-encased words with missing letters.
Pros: There are words on it. And fish. So it's true to the title.
Cons: How can a game be "outrageously fun" if its cover is outrageously boring?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"RPG Fantasy Action Pack" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: It's an "RPG Fantasy Action Pack" with three games in one box.
Pros: It's obvious that you get three games all in one box.
Cons: But what is "RPG Fantasy Action"? Even though there are three covers, I still don't know what's going on.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Rise of the Argonauts" (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
What the Box Tells Us: A Greek hero stands upon a cliff overlooking the sea while wielding a blood-drenched sword and a blood-drenched shield. Blood drips onto the cliff's surface.
Pros: There's a lot of blood in it! Albeit orangey blood.
Cons: The armored, swashbuckling, blood-drenched warrior thing has been done to death already.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Happy Cooking" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: A girl and a bunch of food items are smiling.
Cons: Why are girls always happy to cook? And why is the food overjoyed at their impending death?
Pros: Anthropomorphic food always amuses me.
Love it or Leave It: Love it.

"Calvin Tucker's Redneck Jamboree" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: The box shows two people standing in front of a mobile home, a car on cinder blocks and even an outhouse. There are "12 Redneck inspired events" to play.
Pros: Wow. This game exists.
Cons: Wow. This game exists. Stereotypes in tow.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

Sure, all the major console games have come out, but holiday travelers still need something to play. Check out this week's box art reviews, where we judge games by their covers, featuring newly released portable titles...

"Dungeon Maker II: The Hidden War" (PSP)
What the Box Tells Us: A sword and a pick axe protrude out of a stone. A labyrinth, a castle and some mountains are shown in the background.
Pros: It looks like you'll be making labyrinth-laden dungeons with that sword and pick axe in hand. And calling it "The Hidden War" makes sense; if there's a war going on, I don't see it.
Cons: The box art designers have also hidden the excitement that this game may hold.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Driver's Ed Portable" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: Apparently, you can study to pass a driving test with your DS.
Pros: Clever use of road signs are used to display the game's title.
Cons: You can learn the tests for any state in the U.S. (which is pictured). The problem is that America is almost completely obstructed by the huge, aforementioned road signs.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Left Brain Right Brain 2" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: The two hands with styluses (styli?) are poking a brain.
Pros: It's very clear it's a brain game needing two hands.
Cons: But how do you hold the DS? Plus, it's another brain game box cover showing us a brain.
Love It or Leave It: Leave It.

"Build-a-lot" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: A mansion is for sale. Smaller houses, including one that's half-built, are in the background.
Pros: The cover gets right to the point. It also bears a seal that says it won "The Zeebys Craft Award for Most Innovative Game."
Cons: What's a "Zeebys Craft Award"? It certainly wouldn't win one for most innovative box art.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"C.O.R.E." (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: A person in a military-type armor wields a hefty gun.
Pros: It's apparently a military shooter for the DS. The intrigue is there.
Cons: But the Master Chief-like helmet strays into copycat territory.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

During the holiday shopping season, it's more important than ever for games to stand out... in a good way.

"Family Party: 30 Great Games" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: A slew of pale-faced avatars enjoy some of the 30 great games, like soccer, log-rolling, log-cutting, archery and rope-climbing.
Pros: There's quite a variety of activities on the cover.
Cons: Of the 30, these are the best games to showcase? There's also a baseball, an apple and a brain. Not too exciting. Or great.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"My Fun Facts Coach" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: This game will provide "facts for your daily life."
Pros: It seems you can learn facts about everything from penguins to hot air balloons.
Cons: Some of the squares are cut off. What's the point of showing half or one-third of a random stock image?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Prince of Persia" (Xbox 360, PS3)
What the Box Tells Us: A man is surrounded by the red and purple headwear he's donning. One hand is holding a sword and the other looks like a scary claw.
Pros: The box art designers used his scarf as a frame for the cover, focusing your attention on the protagonist and the title.
Cons: The angle he's leaning at looks like he's about to fall off of a ledge or trip. I hope there's someone else around to save him...
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon"
What the Box Tells Us: A menacing alien stands at the forefront, while a chaotic alien invasion takes place in Paris and Las Vegas.
Pros: Unlike the aforementioned "Mushroom Men," it's pretty clear that the aliens are going to destroy humankind. Humankind donning bell bottoms and shaggy hair.
Cons: If you put this box next to the other three "Destroy All Humans!" titles, I couldn't tell them apart. Try straying from the formula.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Band Manager" (PC)
What the Box Tells Us: A portly, hairy man wearing sunglasses talks on his cell phone while holding a lit cigar. He's surrounded by stacks of money.
Pros: I didn't really know there was a band manager stereotype until I saw this box art -- and now that I see it, it's spot-on.
Cons: But spot-on for a boy band manager. If this were any more specific, Lou Pearlman could sue... if he wasn't in jail.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Professor Heinz Wolff's Gravity" (PC, Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: An adorable old man, presumably Professor Heinz Wolff, holds an apple.
Pros: It has all the professor cliches -- unkempt Einsteinian hair, a bow tie, bushy eyebrows, reading spectacles -- so if you don't know who Professor Wolff is, you'd still get it.
Cons: The apple is usually used to symbolize gravity when it falls out of a tree. So how is gravity used in this game? Is that apple going to be thrown by the old man? That'd be kind of funny.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Professor Heinz Wolff's Gravity" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: The DS version of the aforementioned game shows red-and-white objects flying around.
Pros: It forgoes the professor cliche for something different.
Cons: But different doesn't always mean good. What are these random things? Broken candy canes caught in a tornado?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Safecracker" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: It shows the rotary combination lock of a safe and it says it's "the ultimate puzzle adventure."
Pros: It's a safe all right, and it's begging to be cracked.
Cons: If the cover is depicting the unbridled excitement of safe-cracking in the game, then well...
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Chrono Trigger" (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: The guy with a sword is about to carve up a monster -- but not before his companion charges his weapon with magic. And it looks like the frog ducked just in time.
Pros: See above. Also, it's like a panel in a comic book with the viewer witnessing the action firsthand behind the monster. (And if you're a fan of the game, it's faithful to the SNES cover.)
Cons: But should a re-vamp of the game get a new cover?
Love It or Leave It: Nah. Love it.

With the glut of games out this season, a title's box art is more important than ever. Check out this week's box art reviews to see which titles get picked up and which ones get "Left 4 Dead"...

"Tomb Raider: Underworld" (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PC, Wii, DS)
What the Box Tells Us: A woman wearing a tank top and shorts wields two guns while what looks like mud falls off her limbs.
Pros: That belly button is sure to draw attention to this box.
Cons: Who needs a face when you've got a midriff? Aside from Lara having half a head, this could be any other "Tomb Raider" game.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Left 4 Dead" (Xbox 360, PC)
What the Box Tells Us: A bright green hand against a bright green background holds up four fingers, mainly because its thumb is missing.
Pros: The image of the four-fingered, florescent-green hand is instantly attention-grabbing.
Cons: It doesn't necessarily tell you what kind of game it is. And if you look closely, the thumb looks Photoshopped out.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Need For Speed Undercover" (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS)
What the Box Tells Us: A car speeds away from the police while the sun sets. The sun being an Asian woman's face.
Pros: Most racing games don't feature people on their cover. Perhaps there's a story in this game!
Cons: The floating head in the sky seems kind of odd and misplaced. A last-minute addition?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Petz: Crazy Monkeyz" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: Monkeys are craaaaazy!
Pros: When you think "crazy monkeys" you think of exactly what's going on in this box art -- chaos. Monkeys are holding bananas, running around and screaming. Just what you'd expect.
Cons: The only monkey behavior missing it the flinging of feces. But it's probably a good thing Ubisoft decided to leave that off the cover.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Agatha Christie: Evil Under the Sun" (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: A woman lies on the beach, and her hand rests against the sand holding an empty wine glass.
Pros: Good use of a hand (unlike the aforementioned "Left 4 Dead"). I also like how you see the woman's reflection in the glass.
Cons: Is this woman dead or drunk? The spots in the glass could be red wine, too...
Love It or Leave It? Love it.
