Which are you into more? Tactical stealth action involving genetic manipulation, global conspiracies, and Cold War-era paranoia? Or the virtual end of the world as a rampaging, ancient alien enemy bent on galactic conquest sets their sights on Earth? Well, guess what? You can try out the demos for Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3DS and Mass Effect 3 today.

More about both demos after the break.

MGS Snake Eater 3DS is another interesting major release to hit Nintendo's eShop. I'm wondering if some of the quirks that were part of my demo experience with Resident Evil Revelations will carry over here, specifically the limited/timed demo setup which allows 30 opportunities to play the game in question, if I recall correctly.

And don't forget that EA/Bioware is actually giving you an in-game bonus for Shepherd-ing it up with the Mass Effect 3 demo in the form of downloadable armor for your character in Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning—and vice versa if you play the KoA demo.

The demo to DLC plan is actually one of several Mass Effect 3 plans where you can get extra content for the game outside of the game, including DLC codes included with the new line of toys, as well as participation in the game's Facebook app.

Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3DS will be available on February 21st while Mass Effect 3 arrives for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 on March 6th.

Get a look at new toys from the upcoming Transformers: The Fall of Cybertron game, shots of McFarlane Toys' Halo 4 figures, while Prototype 2 and Dragon Age: Origins tie-ins kick off Dark Horse's digital exclusives program.

Prototype 2 starts its run as a comic this week, Dragon Age: Origins next week from Dark Horse

We brought you news about Dark Horse Comics' Prototype 2 bridging comic a couple of weeks back, and it's about to hit the publisher's digital store this week via iOS and Android devices as part of a alternating release scheme with their Dragon Age: Origins tie-in which starts next week. Both series will sell for 99 cents over their full six-issue runs with print trades for each available in the summer (Prototype in August, DA: O in July).

Both comics have scripts by their respective games' writers, with David Gaider, head writer of Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Origins on the DA: O book and Dan Jolley, lead writer for Prototype 2 providing the story for that book.

Here are the synopses for both books:

Prototype 2

Part 1 of “The Anchor” picks up with Alex Mercer one year after the Blacklight virus hit New York City. Traveling the world in search of something to believe in, Mercer sees only reasons to hate humanity, until far to the north he finds himself in a cabin with a kind old man and his daughter. But when he encounters evil even there, Mercer finally finds something to fight for!

Dragon Age: Origins

It’s unusual for a king to embark on a dangerous quest himself rather than send an emissary, but King Alistair Therein has caught wind of a rumor big enough, and personal enough, that he is compelled to investigate—though not alone. With deadly, wisecracking mercenaries Isabella and Varric by his side, Alistair travels to a city of assassins to learn the truth about his kingdom and his own reign!

Prototype 2 will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC April 24th.

This is what Halo 4 Master Chief looks like

Finally, over on the MTV Geek side, our own Lemonjuice McGee got an exclusive look at the Master Chief figure in development by McFarlane toys to tie in to this year's sequel. The updated Spartan's armor is modified from the look in last year's E3 trailer (can you spot all of the differences), but it's still recognizable as John-117.

Here's the copy on the new figure which should presumably be rolling out sometime later this year:

Stranded in deep space at the end of Halo 3, Master Chief entered a Cryotube aboard the ship Forward Unto Dawn, telling his artificial intelligence companion, Cortana, to "wake me, when you need me." Halo 4 begins with Master Chief waking up ready to face new threats and mysteries.

Cryotube is approximately 9 inches tall and features a working door and a custom angled base. The Master Chief figure in this set features a light coating of frost and ice crystals; remnants of his hibernation between games. Figure also comes with an all-new weapon making its debut in Halo 4!

This fall, Microsoft Studios and 343 Industries are releasing Halo 4, the highly anticipated video game expected to be one of the top entertainment launches of 2012. McFarlane Toys is proud to announce that its best-selling line of Halo action figures continues this fall as well, with figures from Halo 4.

Halo 4 brings back the most popular character of the Halo universe, the Master Chief, and kicks off an all-new trilogy of games. Dubbed the "Reclaimer Trilogy" by 343 Industries, these new games explore the characters of the Master Chief and Cortana, expand the Halo fiction in bold new ways and bring even more of the innovation that the Halo series is known for to the gaming world. McFarlane Toys Halo 4 action figures bring the all-new characters, weapons and vehicles of Halo 4 to video-game fans and action-figure collectors worldwide.

Action figure collectors can expect the same quality and attention to detail in the Halo 4 line that they've come to expect from McFarlane toys. The Halo 4 figure series continues in the 6-inch size introduced with their Halo: Reach figures. They're also introducing a series of larger, boxed figures. These deluxe items are in scale with their 6-inch figures, but include larger accessories, such as Master Chief's Cryotube.

McFarlane Toys is part of a select group of licensees with Halo 4 products available at game launch. Halo 4 Series 1 kicks off this August with four carded figures and one boxed figure set, and expands to include even more figures later in the fall.

Halo fans can see more exclusive Halo images debuting at NY Toy Fair on Waypoint!

Hasbro creates a line of toys for the upcoming multiplatform title, Transformers: The Fall of Cybertron

The game, which had its trailer debut during the VGAs is from Activision and developer High Moon Studios and as the title suggests, features pretty much the end of days for the Transformers' home planet. Also: a bunch of new robots!

Here's the synopsis for the game which should give you some backstory for the new toys:

The successor to acclaimed developer High Moon Studios' highest-rated Transformers game of all time, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron allows players to experience the darkest hours of the war between the Autobots and Decepticons as they vie for control of their dying home world, playing through both sides of the TRANSFORMERS' most epic battles that culminate in their legendary exodus from Cybertron. With the stakes higher and scale bigger than ever, fans will control an unprecedented assortment of TRANSFORMERS characters armed with authentic transformation designed around their unique abilities, including GRIMLOCK's nearly indestructible T-Rex form and the legendary COMBATICONS forming into the colossal BRUTICUS. Taking the franchise's competitive multiplayer to all-new heights, Transformers: Fall of Cybertronfans will go head-to-head in blistering Autobot vs. Decepticon matches after creating their own unique characters with the most in-depth, advanced customization ever before seen in a Transformers game.

The ones from the image below combine into one the combine Transformer, Bruticus (bottom image).

Transformers: The Fall of Cybertron will be available on most things that play video games August 31st.

Forgive the rough (and possibly inaccurate Latin), but this week, the Vita launch begins as some gamers get their hands on the first wave of the limited edition console. Big name franchises like Lumines and Uncharted mark Sony's new system's debut, while on the home console and PC front, Alan Wake is finally on your personal computers, UFC 3 brings the pain, and Twisted Metal returns.

Check out some of this week's major releases after the break.

In the coming days we plan to provide pretty comprehensive coverage and impressions of Sony's new handheld launch which has, at least based on first glance, a pretty strong lineup of first and third party titles out of the gate. The question is really how much will this be the Vita's first week in Japan and how much it'll be the subsequent, spiraling-out-of-control weeks?

Sony's delivered a sweet and sexy new piece of hardware with software and social capabilities that might be a game-changer in the handheld space, but it's all about grabbing gamers' attention. I think gamers were ready for the Vita when the PSP Go came out, but that's not to say Sony has missed their shot—expectations among fans Sony's forays into the handheld space just have weirdly modulated expectations at this point (myself included, having adopted a PSP early on and stuck by it for about three up and down years).

I'll have some thoughts about Sony's next moves beyond this point (because I am nothing if not a bunch of very loud, very present opinions) but for now, enjoy this nearly complete list of titles dropping today and stay tuned for reviews of most if not all of them (along with many, many more Vita games in the coming weeks).

Title: Twisted Metal
Platform(s): PS3

David Jaffe is one of those people for whom the word "outspoken" feels inadequate.* A notorious advocate for and defender of his projects (and the work of his teams) it was nonetheless surprising to find out recently that he left Twisted Metal developer Eat, Sleep, Play for other ventures after the resurrection of the Playstation-exclusive vehicular combat game (a genre that seemed to have a glut of entries once upon a time).

Departures and developers aside, what's the response going to be like to this kind of game in this decade? Are there enough people with fond memories of Twisted Metal Black or even the PS1 entries to give this reboot the push it needs at retail? I personally love a comeback story (and can be counted in that category of fans of the earlier titles) so here's to the success of Twisted Metal this week.

*Last I checked on Twitter Monday, he was still out there talking about responses to the recently-released demo and even guessing that some reviews swirling around weren't necessarily based on the full game.

Title: UFC 3
Platform(s): PS3, Xbox 360

I have yet to play one of THQ's licensed MMA brawlers, but I feel like I need to get around to it at some point. Wait, do you guys care if I point out these blind spots? I'd hate to think it diminishes what I'm sure is a booming authoritative voice on gaming... or something, I guess. The franchise that Dana White and company built is, I've read, one of the fastest-growing sports in the worlds right now, and the games seem to do well enough for publisher THQ. I chalk it up to catering to an audience who grew up at then end of the 90's and beginning of the aughts with a healthy love of WWE-style wrestling and as they got older kind of figured they should trade in the theatrics for real-live eye gouges.

That's my theory, anyway, and you can't take it away from me.

Title: Alan Wake
Platform(s): PC

Better late than never, right? Remedy's banking that if you have a PC and haven't played their entry in the survival horror genre, then you'll be enticed by this week's release which also includes all of the DLC which accompanied the game on the 360. And if you haven't played this game, you really should. Although it's shaky in both its narrative and mechanical execution—on the former you can't get away from the feeling that there are some Finnish folks working to translate a uniquely American style of airport reading pulp horror—the Microsoft-published game had one toe in the pool of greatness (and one of my favorite last lines in a game in recent memory).

Title: Rhythm Heaven Fever
Platform(s): Wii

I remember my time with this series DS counterpart with equal parts glee and frustration, most of the frustration stemming from my basic lack of rhythm (certainly a shame to the more musically-inclined members of my family), and all of the elation coming directly from my love of the generally excellent rhythm minigames from the innocuously named Nintendo SPD Group 1. Will its Wii counterpart have the same magic? Only time (and Jason Cipriano in his forthcoming review) can tell.

So in what will either be a brilliant piece of self-promotion and gamer outreach or a beautiful disaster, last night Double Fine launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce an old-school point and click adventure game, led by Tim Schafer, the first for him in 14 years. This comes days after Minecraft creator Markus Persson offered to fund a sequel to Psychonauts out of his own pocket.

With a goal of $400,000 set at the beginning of the campaign, Double Fine has already exceeded that goal by half, at $600k as of the writing of this post. And the campaign still has 33 days to go.

So why are they doing this? What's it all about? How might it end up being a tremendous disaster (I don't think it will be)?

In a video at the top of the page (or if you're disinclined to watch, in the body of the page itself), Schafer explains that first and foremost, they wanted to make an adventure game in a market that seemingly doesn't have a whole lot of time for the genre (Telltale's output, of course, being the exception). So they opted to crowd-fund the game at a modest budget with a planned six to eight month development cycle (the untitled project has a planned October release), and a digital release through Steam in order to keep costs and publisher interference out of the way. Schafer assures fans that any excess money taken in from the campaign will go right back into the game as well as a documentary series about the process of making it.

The other major element of their campaign is that backers will not only get a copy of the game (there's all sorts of incentives to potential backers), but that the Double Fine development team will be showing their work and getting backer feedback throughout the process, and here I wanted to get all pessimistic about how much trouble it would be to keep that kind of two-way communication and feedback going throughout the development process (it's already tough enough making something with your fellow devs, much less adding the community into the mix) but I suspect that Double Fine has engender enough support from the fans that they can easily sidestep the pitfalls here.

So what's it all going to be? We'll see in a few months as the game starts chugging along. By the way, in the 15 minutes it took me to write this, the page reached $634k.

Catch up with The Darkness if you're playing the game (or even if you're not) and our friends at Merge Games (The Binding of Isaac) want to give you something.

Buy one of the last copies of the Shadows of the Damned OST before I do

Limited to 1000 copies on its release last year, the soundtrack by longtime Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka is simply fantastic. Blending several different styles with a core flamenco theme (you know, on account of its lead character, Gabriel Hotspur Garcia), and it's just as eclectic and strange as the game, but a far better total package. There are a little under 300 copies left (probably more copies of the OST than of the under-marketed game currently in circulation), so you should grab one if you're willing to drop the $30 on it.

Here's the ad copy for the release which is on sale at e-tailer GHM:

Legendary composer Akira Yamaoka and Grasshopper Manufacture proudly announce the release of the Original Soundtrack to this year’s most outrageous game, Shadows of the Damned! This selection of songs from the universally praised score takes the listener on a journey to Hell and back with Yamaoka as the co-pilot. Indeed, Yamaoka's designed this soundtrack as a "sound movie" - an aural imagining of Garcia and Johnson's adventure into the world of the Damned.

“I wanted to craft a soundtrack that was more than just a collection of the most popular songs from Damned. I set out to create an experience that would take players back to the game, as if they were “watching” a movie,” Yamaoka explains.

The soundtrack features the hit theme to Shadows of the Damned Take Me To Hell (Broken Dream) featuring frequent collaborators Mary-Elizabeth McGlynn and Troy Baker, and the ending theme Shadows of the Damned featuring legendary punk band The Damned. The soundtrack is limited to only 1000 pressings, making it a collector’s item. And as special bonus, Yamaoka signing ALL CDs sold to international customers as thanks (Japanese exchange rate and shipping fees overseas)

Play the game! Read the comic!

With 2K Games' The Darkness II hitting shelves this week, I'm kind of surprised that the book's publisher Image Comics hasn't gone all out with some kind of digital sales for the long-running series. Right now, most of the single issues are the usual $1.99 through ComiXology, with several trades running $7.99. Still, it might be worth your time to check the series out, maybe jumping in with the Origins trade with a script by Garth Ennis (guaranteeing it'll be some nasty stuff—blood and guts being in his particular wheelhouse).

Or, if you want to get really deep into the quasi-religious/supernatural/horror mythology of Image, you might want to check out the free 30-page intro issue of Artifacts. In either event, check out some comics, maybe buy a few on the cheap, if you're so inclined.

Kind of But Not Quite Gaming News Extra! Merge Games is giving away the fancy The Binding of Isaac Unholy Edition

We recently brought you the details of the retail version of The Binding of Isaac which is coming to stores (or you favorite e-tailer) with a special Unholy Edition. Merge Games, Isaac's publisher, are giving away a copy. This is their own deal, but if you'd like to win a copy, simply head over to their Facebook page and "Like" it, to earn a chance to ask Edmund Mcmillen, the game's creator a question. The best ten questions will be answered by McMillen and receive a copy of the game. So there's that.

Today, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced their list of nominees for 2011's game of the year, and it looks pretty close to most other GOTY lists you've seen up until now. Arkahm City, Modern Warfare 3, and Portal 2 top the list which has a slightly European twist with the nomination for FIFA 12. I wanted to comment on the lack of smaller, downloadable titles like Bastion, but Minecraft—although it's pretty much an institution—more or less fits that bill.

You can see the nominees after the break.

Batman: Arkham City
Battlefield 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
FIFA 12
L.A. Noire
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Minecraft
Portal 2
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

The BAFTAs also have an Audience Award, meaning you can vote for your favorite title from the list on the BAFTA Game Awards website. The winners will be announced on March 16th.

The Simpsons Arcade comes to consoles 20 years after the fact, while the much-anticipated (by yours truly, at least) Gotham City Impostors and Shank 2 make their debut. Oh, and Kingdoms of Amalur might just be the best open world game that doesn't have Elder Scrolls in the title.

Title: Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning
Platform(s): Xbox 360, PC, PS3

I've been playing 38 Studios/Big Huge Games' Kingdoms of Amalur for a few hours now (maybe ten or more), and the trajectory of my experience was something like this:

Hour one: "Oh, okay. This game sure is... bright. Bright? Yeah, that seems to be the prevailing look here."

Hour two: "Why are they throwing all of these weapons at me? I'm never going to use them. Forget you and your overly-complex combat system. Also, I don't care much for the way the buttons are mapped."

Hour six: "Just switch out with my Fae blades, then over to my hammer, then back to my staff, and this enemy is dead!"

My review, which is coming a little later this week will obviously not encompass the entire game because there's so danged much of it but as a spoiler, allow me to say that while I've yet to really be drawn into the fiction (whose fantasy is a bit higher than I prefer) the combat is unparalleled in the genre and its many systems describe a brawny RPG experience in a surprisingly bright wrapper.

Title: Gotham City Impostors
Platform(s): PSN, XBLA, PC

I feel like I've been hyped for this game for months, and now that it's finally here, I need to find the time to actually, you know, play it. From the very beginning, the Monolith-developed class-based shooter has seemed like an alternately odd and kind of audacious take on the Batman universe without actually really having to be in any version of Gotham that we can recognize.

At this point, it's a matter of actually getting hands-on and seeing what it's like with other, certainly curious players and see how Monolith has been able to take their skill with developing brutal shooters with the F.E.A.R. series and translate it into this oddball, seemingly comic-manic game.

Title: Resident Evil: Revelations
Platform(s): 3DS

Another review on the way here, but as you might recall from my demo impressions piece, I welcomed the series' return back to its more methodically-paced roots, forcing you to conserve ammo and deal with enemies more strategically (i.e. running away).

And Capcom seems to know that some gamers might be wary of another 3DS RE title after the perhaps slightly over-priced Mercenaries underwhelmed last year. This is a full-fledged game on offer here and not simply an expanded arcade mode, plus it's got more of the ever-deepening Resident Evil mythos for people who are into that kind of thing.

I'm into that kind of thing.

Title: Shank 2
Platform(s): PSN, XBLA, PC

I was super-late to the party with Shank only downloading it last month after a half-off sale convinced me that it was maybe about time to try one of those games everyone had been talking about for a while there. And my experience was kind of mixed: while I thought the art style was pretty engaging, in terms of overall experience, it felt like a copy several generations removed from the kind of grindhouse action movie it was emulating, and I never really got a feel for the combat's nuances, relying on mashing the attack for whatever weapon I had in hand at the time and praying for the best.

Thankfully, developer Klei Entertainment seems to be aware of some of the shortcoming of the game, at least in terms of its combat and are looking to ease players into the action with more elaboration on precisely how one shanks in the world of Shank 2. If the devs are able to clarify that whole experience a bit more, I think Shank 2 could be the kind of game a guy like me could fall for.

Title: The Simpsons Arcade
Platform(s): PSN, XBLA (February 8th is the official date, but it appears to be available now on XBLA)

Jason put together a fine write up for the game in advance of its wider release on PSN after a limited bit of exclusivity for Playstation Plus members last week. His feeling: it's very much the same 20-year-old game for all the good and bad that that implies, and you're simply going to have to decide for yourself how much nostalgia means to you.

Konami is betting somewhere around 10 of your American dollars and I'd be willing to take that bet as well.

A recent study by the New York-based Institute for Special Populations Research conducted through self-reporting among 3380 participants found that in around 5% of those interviewed, the respondents reported "moderate to extreme problem game playing." Keep in mind, this represents 1/20th of the population, and the results are again, based on self-reported results which could skew in either direction, but it's more ammunition for the argument that there is a persistent problem with gaming addiction.

Luther Elliott, Andrew Golub, Eloise Dunlap, and Geoffrey Ream led the study participants aged 18 and up who played games at least one hour in the week before the interview was conducted. The team grouped the types of games that the participants were playing into 15 distinct genres, finding that the incident of FPS, action-adventure, MMOs, online gambling and role-playing games had the highest incidents of behaviors associated with addictive/problem behavior.

While the American Psychiatric Association continues, at this point, to reject adding gaming addiction to its diagnostic manual of disorders, the DSM, I think many of us can easily point to someone in our lives who allow their gaming to run rampant in varying degrees of destructive ways. The documentary Second Skin from 2008 is one of those really effective pieces of anecdotal reporting that makes this point very articulately.

I keep returning to the word "anecdotal," though, because for the time being, there's no concrete evidence, no thoroughly controlled studies that we can point to in order to make a convincing case in either direction. So for the time being, this study represents some interesting observations, but it'll be more interesting still when someone is able to take a more focused look at the issue.

Based on this new trailer from Atlus, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 won't be straying too far from the design of the 2009 release. In terms of plot, it doesn't seem very far from the usual-usual with SMT games, featuring a ticking clock until the end of the world and a group of young people making deals with demons to stave off the apocalypse.

More details about this release and the trailer after the break.

According to the official site, the first game's mechanics have been fine-tuned here, and there's a new Demon Compendium (think Pokedex for demons), along with more demons and a promised doubling of the content from the original. The character designs this time around are by Suzuhito Yasuda who was behind the characters in the anime Durarara!!, bringing a more elaborate look to the series' characters than in previous installments.
