Doom 3: BFG Edition

Doom. It's a name that every gamer knows, no matter how young or old they are. It's the game that helped define a genre that has overtaken the industry. The games have been around for almost 20 years, helping to establish id Software as a force to be reckoned with, and the team behind it, including John Carmack and John Romero, as some of the biggest names in development. Doom and Doom II took video games by storm in the 1990s, but then the franchise went quiet – at least in terms of new games. While there were spinoffs and updates, longtime fans yearned for Doom 3, which they finally received in 2004. Now, seven years after its release, Doom 3 is back in the BFG Edition, updated and improved for this console generation's hardware, and packing a few surprises.

Virtue's Last Reward

999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors was one of 2010's hidden gems, and the first in the Zero Escape series of visual novel games from Aksys Games. It was a peculiar release, in that it put more emphasis on the story than on the gameplay, which resulted in a totally unique experience on the DS that Stateside users were not accustomed to seeing. While the events that took place in 999 didn’t always work out for everyone in the game, if you endured the brain-bending puzzles and multiple story lines, players were rewarded with the true ending and an overwhelming sense of self-satisfaction. Virtue's Last Reward is the second entry in the Zero Escape series, and it picks up a year after 999, with an all-new twist on the already twisted Nonary Game.

Giant Sparrow's Ian Dallas

The Unfinished Swan is one of this year's most experimental, and creative games that has been commercially released. The PSN title was the first title from the team at Giant Sparrow, who had some support from Sony, but developed the game on their own. One of the key members of that team is Ian Dallas, he started Giant Sparrow, and serves as its Creative Director. Playing such an intimate role in a game like The Unfinished Swan, Mr. Dallas was able to give us some insights behind the scenes of this amazing game. Find out how certain aspects of the game, like the visual and audio cues came about, as well as how long it took to fine tune the splats of each of the paint balls. Oh, and we asked him about Adam Sandler and the swan, because someone had to.

The Unfinished Swan

People play video games for all different kinds of reasons. Whether it's to relax, experience a new world, or just escape this one, everyone has their own justification for picking up that controller. People relate to games on different levels, but that connection is what has kept gamers gaming for all these years. Very rarely does a game come along that makes you rethink not only those connections, but also video games themselves; Sony's latest Playstation Network indie experiment, The Unfinished Swan, does just that - turning perception on its side. This release takes gaming outside of its comfortable box, and creates an experience unlike anything that has ever been done before.

Retro City Rampage
Dear Old Video Games,

I love you.

Sincerely,
Brian Provinciano
V-Blank Entertainment Inc.

That pretty much sums up Retro City Rampage.

Retro City Rampage is an anomaly on multiple levels. It started off as a pet project of sole developer Brian Provinciano and was to be a "reinterpretation" (read: de-make) of Grand Theft Auto as a homebrew game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (yes, that NES). That is not what Retro City Rampage ended up being. In the end, it's a thoughtful, caring, love letter to games from days gone by. Ultimately it’s a mix of hundreds of different games and pop culture references mashed into one top-down festival of carnage for your PlayStation 3 and/or PlayStation Vita.

Spy Hunter

Spy Hunter is one of those games that feels like its been around since the beginning of video games. Originally released in 1983, it predates just about every modern day franchise, with the exception of only a few sustaining classics like Space Invaders and Pac-Man. The original put players in the driver's seat of a souped-up sports car as a spy, trying to evade and attack enemies. One of the most memorable aspects of the game was its unique top-down perspective that gave players a limited view of the horizon while their car was traveling at high speeds on both land and water. The other game-defining feature was the use of an amazing arrangement of Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn theme song as the soundtrack. Since its original release, Spy Hunter was rebooted in the early 2000s, and now it's seeing its second resurrection on the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

DC Comics features some of the most recognizable superheroes that have ever been created. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are just a couple of the characters that have become household names over their decades old existences. The DC characters have saved numerous worlds, countless times, even if they have to do it with force, but who ever said saving earth would be easy? You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. The thing is, in Injustice: Gods Among Us those "eggs" are other DC superheroes.

New Little King's Story

New Little King's Story isn't exactly "new." Konami has released an updated version of the Cing developed, Xseed Games published (in the U.S.) Wii game, Little King's Story, from 2009 for the PlayStation Vita. Frequently sited as one of the Wii's hidden gems, Little King's Story is routinely referenced as a solid game, that would have been enjoyable no matter what platform it was released on. New Little King's Story puts that theory to the test, squeezing down the assorted elements of its big screen counterpart, and packs them into one tight little Vita release.

Dishonored

One of the things that set this console generation apart from all of the others is that developers have given the player more freedom than ever before. Countless games this generations billed themselves as sandbox games that allowed the player to do what they want, how they wanted to do it. The inherent catch always was that what you had to do everything within the confines of the level design. But, what if a game was so expertly designed that it offered you a multitude of options, so much so that it would allow players to make choices based on what they wanted to do. Sure, it may sound run of the mill, but how many times have you actually done that? Take a moment to think about it. Now, contemplate the idea of playing a game as an assassin that doesn't need to kill anyone, at all, if he doesn't want to. It makes that idea sound pretty exceptional. Such is the story behind Arkane Studios' Dishonored.
