'Resident Evil: Revelations HD' Review (Wii U) -- Looking Into The Abyss

"Resident Evil" as a series has been on the ropes for last couple of years. With a main numbered entry that was an affront to humanity, a smaller portable title overshadowed by its bigger brother, and a 3DS launch game that skimped on content, it was surprising to see that some fans were shouting for an HD port of the admittedly overlooked and somewhat meandering "Resident Evil: Revelations." Whie Charles was thoroughly unimpressed, I decided to dive in the HD rerelease to see if maybe the few additions would make it worth another trip.

I'm surprised, given the amount of bashing, that "Resident Evil: Revelations HD" is actually pretty OK -- threatening to even be good at times.

Art Attack: This Gallery of Animated Fighting Game Backgrounds is a Treat

To ease the interminable workday keeping us from a long weekend of cheap beer, cheaper hotdogs, and too much exposure to the sun, Reddit user RudeBootie has kindly uploaded a collection of animated fighting game backgrounds, sans fighters.

My eye is admittedly untrained, but I'm spotting a lot of SNK-published titles from the "King of Fighters," "Art of Fighting," "Mark of the Wolves," and "Samurai Showdown" franchises, with a perfunctory nod to Capcom with E. Honda's bathhouse from "Street Fighter II" at the bottom.

If nothing else, the collection is a shrine to pixel art craftsmanship and a reminder that these iconic arenas defined an entire genre during the formative and prolific mid-90's. The backgrounds on display run the gamut from melodramatic, to surreal, to pedestrian, featuring everything from ruined castles to beached oil tankers, monkeys bathing in an onsen to a cheering mermaid in a clamshell, idyllic landscapes to crowded street markets.

'Payday 2' Live-Action Web Series Commits Grand Theft Crime Flick Tropes

The web series follows the action as masked crooks "Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf and Chains descend on Washington D.C. for an epic crime spree," according to developer 505 Games. The series of shorts is from director Demian Lichtenstein who was responsible for the Elvis-themed crime flick "3,000 Miles to Graceland" and is directing the big screen adaptation of "Payday: The Heist."

Meanwhile, the retail sequel for the PS3-exclusive "Payday: The Heist," "Payday 2," is coming to the PC, 360, and PS3 in August.

Ok, for some reason I forgot about the zombies in "The Last of Us" until last week. Were there zombies at Sony's E3 press conference last year? I suppose the consumer in me, having thoroughly enjoyed Naughty Dog's Uncharted series, imposed an unconscious media blackout for the last year. Yet, Sony had other ideas as they recently sent over a preview code that featured two of the game's settings. Aside from this reintroduction of zombies, here 9 other things I learned from playing "The Last of Us".

See The War From The Red Army's Perspective In This Cinematic 'Company Of Heroes 2' Trailer

It sucked being a soldier in Russia's Red Army during WWII. In spite of its impressive size, the Soviet Union's fighting force was made up disproportionately of the tired, the poor, the uneducated, and the hungry who had to rely on dwindling supplies (one apocryphal story claims that it was one bullet to a rifle at one point) in order to repel Germany's northward assault.

And this is the perspective you get to see in Relic's trailer for "Company of Heroes 2," their RTS sequel out this summer from publisher SEGA for the PC.

Four Downloadable Content Packs and Season Pass Coming to 'Metro: Last Light'

Metro: Last Light

One of the attractive things, I think, about 4A Games' "Metro: Last Light" is how different it is from other first-person shooters. Where "Call of Duty" is bombastic and jingoistic, "Metro" is atmospheric, tense, and reserved. It's about hardscrabble refugees instead of over-muscled soldiers, about dire oppression more than empowerment.

"Metro: Last Light" falls in lockstep with its big-budget brethren when it comes to business, though: publisher Deep Silver have announced a crop of downloadable content and a season pass for the recently released title.

Microsoft Revealed A New Set-Top Box That May Also Play Games

It finally happened. After all of the rumors, speculation, hype and nonsense, Microsoft has revealed the next-generation Xbox console, strangely dubbed Xbox One. Unfortunately, I must have missed the part where they talked about all of the cool next-gen games we'll be playing.

The new "console war" is something we've all been anxious for, but for me there may already be a clear winner. The conference started off well, quickly introducing us to the new Xbox One dashboard. But, seeing it filled with TV shows, streaming services and movies was a bit of a let down, especially after Sony came out of the gate with games in the front seat. Yesterday's event at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters felt more like a TiVo party than a games console reveal and, in all honesty, that's exactly what I expected. After learning former CBS exec Nancy Tellum was joining the team, it was clear Microsoft had decided to put a stronger focus on film and video entertainment. Don't get me wrong, a "Halo" TV series with Steven Spielberg on board is pretty darn awesome, but it sadly seems to come at the cost of pushing games to the side.
