Telltale's next episodic adventure game, based on the long-running Vertigo comic series, shows the challenges of keeping the peace around a bunch of fairy tale characters.
Even if the series is a little long in the tooth (and could have done with a proper ending once the battle with the Emperor was over), writer Bill Willingham's "Fables" represents one of the finest concepts to make it to the comics page in the aughts. With a mix of mystery, political intrigue, an expansive mythology, sex, and a lot of blood, Willingham kept us coming back to Fabletown wondering if its exiled inhabitants would ever make their way back home.
The basic premise is that when an evil entity begins enslaving the disconnected lands of fairy tale characters, a handful of them retreats to our world where they set up a magically-protected community in the middle of New York city. The law in town is Bigby Wolf (former the Big Bad Wolf), a short-tempered hard-ass who's nonetheless the person you want on the case when there's wrongdoing to sniff out.
Telltale hasn't yet given any specifics about the case (or cases) Bigby will be investigating in this prequel to "Fables," but based on this trailer, it's clear the whole thing will get messy and violent.
"Fables: The Wolf Among Us" will make its public debut at PAX Prime later this month, with the wider public able to play the game on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Mac later this fall.
