Revealed at Japan Expo in France over the holiday weekend is the latest, fresh off the assembly line Pocket Monster, set to debut in the upcoming Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the 3DS. His name is Honedge, is both a steel and ghost type, plus as you can clearly see, he looks like a sword.
Junichi Masuda from Game Freak, the stewards of the Pokemon franchise, explains all in the video above, prepped for Japan Expo attendees. Though most of it covers the fact that X and Y's setting, the Kalos region, was primarily inspired by France.
Not a whole lot is known about Honedge (named Hitosuki in Japan), other than what Masuda has stated. Again, he's a mixture of two different types and is supposedly "an ancient soul is thought to reside in the sword."
Meanwhile, Tiny Cartridge has some additional insight. Apparently the aforementioned soul was once human, and the blue cloth that's attached to the hilt is basically its arm. As for abilities:
"Honedge can learn the attack Swords Dance, a Normal-type move. Swords Dance is a frenetic dance that uplifts the fighting spirit and sharply raises the user’s Attack stat. The effect can be increased by using this move multiple times in succession, helping Trainers who deploy this move at the beginning of a battle to overwhelm one opponent after another!"
For those of you who find Honedge a bit on the weird or lazy side, don't forget Rattata from the original Pokemon gmaes, who was just a rat. So it could be far worse; its name could by Sword-y for example. Anyhow, one cannot wait for the inevitable Pokemon that resemble shields, guns, and grenade launchers.
