Skybound and Gamagio launched a brand new game based on Robert Kirkman's Eisner Award-winning comic series "The Walking Dead" last night. "The Walking Dead: Assault" for iOS begins the moment Rick awakes in the hospital, and sees players assembling a team of four to take on the zombie apocalypse.
Rather than being an off-shoot of the original series like Telltale's adaptation, Assault follows the same events that occur in the comics. Players will relive Sheriff Rick's first waking moments then travel through Atlanta, leading up to the eventual camp site invasion. All of the locations have been recreated in a "3D comic book" style.
The game will allow players to assemble a team of their favorite four characters, choosing between Rick, Glenn, Shane, Lori, Carl, Andrea, Sophia and Dale. Each of the characters has their own unique abilities and can be upgraded as you progress. You'll also be scavenging supplies and distracting the zombie horde with flares and car alarms. Three different difficulty settings have also been included.
Game Center support will reward players with achievements and leaderboards, while bonus challenges unlock additional content such as wallpapers, artwork and behind-the-scenes Walking Dead trivia.
"The Walking Dead: Assault" is available now for $1.99 in the App Store, but the introductory pricing won't last long. "Shortly after launch" the universal app's price tag will be raised to $2.99.
Keep in mind that this is just the beginning. Future episodes, including "Safety Behind Bars" and "Fear the Hunters" are coming soon and will introduce additional characters Michonne, Tyreese and The Governor, along with new weapons.
