This weekend, the Sony Online Entertainment's Planetside 2 beta is getting streaming functionality to via Twitch in a new update. What this means is that in lieu of ungainly or expensive capture software, players in the MMOFPS can simply run stream their games through Twitch's service with the push of a button.
Twitch's service, which boasts 20 million users, has been looking to make inroads into being more accessible to a wider range of gamers. The Planetside 2 partnership is their way of making it easier to show people how good (or bad) you are at shooting people in the face in-game. The folks at Twitch have had ambitions to serve console gamers, but for the time being, it looks like they'll continue working within the confines of the PC play space.
For the moment, Twitch and Sony are cautioning users that this functionality is very early, so might not be as stable as the final version, but should allow users to add to the already 20 million hours of game streaming that's out there for Planetside 2.
Now this partnership with Sony could translate into something bigger and better down the line for the PS3 and Vita, but there are likely all kinds of kinks to work out in terms of integrating this into future and previous games, preventing Blu-ray/movie/TV streaming, and so on.
Planetside 2 launches on November 20th for the PC.
