Have you ever sat and thought for a moment about how grim the Transformers story is: stranded on Earth after the brutal civil war on their own, a bunch of shapeshifting robots try to eke out some kind of survival while occasionally meeting up and attempting to destroy their opposite numbers. It's surprisingly dark for a toy line and show about robots that become cars that become robots again.
The August release of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron by developer High Moon studios looks like it'll be mining the direst parts of the series' mythology, setting up a conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons on their war-ravaged, flaming husk of a world, ending with the survivors ultimately making their exit from Cybertron. In the game, you'll be able to play as characters from both sides in the campaign and multiplayer, and in the latter mode, you can create your own Autobot or Decepticon using the game's character creator.
The story and gameplay trailer below gives you a taste of all of that, so if you like your robot battles to be apocalyptic, I invite you to check it out.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 28th.
