'Max Payne' To Be Gritty and Noirish On Your iPhone and Android

Posted 2/16/12 12:30 pm EST by Charles Webb in Android, iPhone / iPad, News

With Max Payne 3 on the way, it looks like Rockstar wants you to catch up with the grizzled, tragedy-prone cop's earlier adventures on mobile devices sometime later this year.

The developer made the announcement during one of their recent online "Asked and Answered" Q&A's with fans:

Yes – following the release of Grand Theft Auto III for iOS (and Android devices) late last year, the original Max Payne will be our next release for mobile devices. We will have an official announcement soon confirming the release date, but you can expect it to finally be released sometime in the next couple months.

There you have it: although no release date has been laid out for the mobile versions of the bullet time shooters, they are on the way. I'm curious about how these will handle on touch devices given that their main thing was brutal, precision shooting, diving, and being plagued with immense feelings and guilt and rage at the murder of your family and betrayal by the local political and business structure.

It may sound like I'm busting on the tone and plot of the earlier games in the series (and I am, a little bit), but I actually genuinely love the first two Max Payne titles for hyper-stylized take on noir. The stories may have gone over the top, but not after settling over you with this relentless, unabashed grimness and misery. Here's hoping that thread is carried over in the next entry in the sequel when it drops in May.
